Default xB, nice 2 they eyes, nice 2 ride, bad for my ears

we didnt want to look totally ragged once we stepped out the car, but it was crazy nice outside yesterday so we rode with the front windows 100% up and the back windows 100% down....the music was up pretty high and at first we thought it was just the music blasting at our ears but something didnt feel right so we turned off the music. our ears were still popping! the air pressure couldnt balance out right riding like that and we were probably only at 60mph. anyway....we wont be riding like that again. neone else?

Try "rolling" both front and back windows about 1/4-1/2 the way down. You'll still get air, but it doesn't blow your hair all around. The air coming in the front windows goes back out the back windows...

That does'nt just happen going 60!! My kids always bug me to roll their windows down in the back. So I let them a few days after I bought my xB, I damn near blew out my eardrums just going around the neighborhood! I don't think Toyota tested for that . I found that if you at least crack open on of the front windows at the same time than it helps. Later! :D

Can't say the vehicle doesn't seal properly. I don't mind it because as the others do, if my back windows are down 2 inches my fron't will always be done as well.

The effect is felt/heard in OTHER cars, too.

What it is: A low frequency air pressure effect.

YOU are in an organ pipe that resonates at about 8 cycles per second

the rear side windows when open are the mouth of the "stoppered pipe"

the wind rushing by the outside of the car creates LOW PRESSURE in the car.

the -volume- of air in the car is springy, compressible. The air pressure in the car reduces, then snaps back. Repeat:

boing boing boing

You cannot -hear this- but your eardrums feel it

I could do this in my Subaru and in the Chry. LHS and in other cars, too- even the Model T coupe, just by opening rear windows alone. It's always a rear side window or -back window open- effect.

at basis it is a resonance effect

therefore, to break the resonance effect add an air pressure leak (open a front window) OR partially close rear window(s) until the body resonance effect is broken or thrown off-resonance.

Not looking forward to what? You roll the back windows down on any car with the front ones up and it happens. The solution: roll the front ones down. Even with a 1/2 inch gap on the front it releases the pressure and you don't get the low frequency pounding. You people act like you've never been in a car before sometimes, it amazes me.

It's even worse with my dual sunroof setup. I get a massive
18Hz bump bump bump from the air going over the top of
the box!

I just deal with it though. I've got the long hair thing going
so yeah, I don't like having the box full open unless I'm
cruising or traffic is stop and go and I'm not going to be
popping ear drums with wind noise!

Happens in all cars. My solution: use air conditioning.

air conditioning is evil. weak and gas guzzling , lol i try to use it the least bit as possible. unless it's someone elses car that has COLD ac and when they pay for the gas , lol. noit a weak scion ac with my money fueling the tank. lol.

Hmm. I just drive around with the windows all the way down, and the top open. No pops or anything. Not even on the HWY.

I wonder why that is? ?

AC doen't cost more than 1mpg to gas mileage is my guess

AC in the current Scions is strong. I'm in Miami. It's hot already but cool in the Box

Suggest you have the dealer check your Lava's system: there's a fix for that- new compressor and more... do a search for the relevant threads.

ceep kool lava rule
even tho real lava's hot
