I went and test drove a auto trans xB yesterday. I am more interested in a manual trans, as I thought the auto trans wouldn't be too peppy. (I know it's not a hot rod, that is what my '27 street rod is for.) I was kinda surprised at the auto, but still am interested in a manual. No dealers around here (Jax. FL) have a manual on the lot. SO, my question is, for those that have driven both, which was better, and what did you choose, and why? I'm getting to be an old fart (32), so naturally, auto trans would be cool..but the kid in my wants the manual. Just looking for opinions here, that's all.

I'm 32 also. I did not test drive the stick because I knew I wanted the auto. After driving a 2200 lb 88HP ford escort with a manual, I knew what my lifestyle dictated.
I enjoy having an extra hand free more than I do shifting in time to the music. There are other reasons and I'm sure the debate could go on for ever. I must say, it's the smoothest auto trany I've driven.
What would you be happy with if you didn't have this site to get opinions from?

I'm an even older fart (49) and only got to test drive an auto. I still went with the manual though. The auto is the smoothest I've ever driven on any car. But, for me, the manual is just more FUN!!!
I got my PW last Thursday night after waiting 3 weeks. For me, I made the right choice. Either way, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Another older fart (46) and I have the auto and it just seems to have more pep than the manual on my partner's xB. I know this is just because the auto downshifts when you might not elect to do so with a manual, but I wouldn't change mine for the world. Like was said earlier, it is also great to have your hand free.

The peppyness of the vehicle is much more with the manual. I was only able to test drive an auto, and it felt "adequate" at best. Hell, I even initially ordered an automatic.
But, I changed my mind - I wanted an 5-speed. Luckily I have a great dealer who grabbed a 5-speed from another dealership 4 days before my automatic was to arrive, and sold that one to me
According to most auto magazines, the 5-speed is up to a whole 2 seconds faster in the quarter mile than the automatic. It's no lie, the 5-speed is much faster.

As a 10 year Honda CRX Manual driver, I was extremely disappointed with the low end torque of the Xb.
I found the automatic to have more pep. Whether it is the computer control, the technology of automatic transmissions, or the transmission/engine coupling, I can not say.
But coming from a manual 10 year old car. I found the Xb manual pedestrian at best.
My 2 cents.

I'm going auto as well, hey I'm 45 years old and I got to many things to do to be bothered with a manual like sticking my left leg out the window :o , besides if I want horse power I'll drive my damn CAMARO. I didn't buy the xB for pep, I bought it for reliability, price and fuel economy. But knowing my kids I think the turbo charger and monster headers are heading my way anyhow.
