why does my '05 Xa special edition red only get a measley 30 mpg? i drive pretty easy, half and half, max cruise of 65, and still only 30! do those dumb big rims/low-pro tires eat lots? i didnt buy the dang thing to go fast, i got it to get good mpg! is there any mod i can do to increase mpg? at $3/gallon and climbing who cares how much HP they have. wish they'd make it in a deisel. i love my car but its embarassing when people are shocked at my paltry mileage. advice? tom in dallas

I know with my stock setup, if I tip the throttle in beyond 3500 rpms much, the gas needle starts moving the wrong direction. Our 1.5L engines need tons of gas to be aggressive and it's actually not that rewarding. The handbook suggests a routine shift point at 3000 rpms. This gives me the best mileage and the car, clutch, and transmission glide smoothly between changes. It was as if this baby was made to be driven for economy only. Maybe they'll gift us with the 1.8L someday for those of us who like to "goose it".

Whats wrong with 30 MPG? First it's way below the EPA mileage. Second, it's 60 miles further you can drive(30 MPG VS. 35 MPG...5 more MPG x11.9 Gal.=60 miles). 60 miles is a lot! At what he's getting now, at $3+ a gallon, thats $6+ extra per fill-up. It adds up fast, especially if you fill up twice a week!

Well if you want better milage, you Could remove the back seat and passenger seat along with the radio and parts of the dash in order to save weight. After all it takes more energy to move something heavy then it does to move something light. Or you could go on a diet and get somewhere around 100 lbs even. Loosing weight is the easier way to lighten up the vehicle you drive.

Big heavy rims and stop and go city traffic will kill your mileage.

EPA mileage is:

1) an estimate,

2) not designed to tell you how much you'll get but to be able to compare cars between makers,

3) Not based on reality.

It's a simulated test on a dyno. They don't even measure the amount of gas used, it is based on calculations from tailpipe emissions. The average speed of the highway test comes out around 48 MPH.

Don't just focus on the BIG print numbers on the window sticker, look at what it says to the side and below. it actaully will give the range that people are getting and it starts well below 30 mpg.

The most important thing you can modify to get better MPG is your driving habits. IMO...

you are insane to think 30 is bad. Show me one car on the market that gets the EPA mileage, I hate to tell you but you will always get 2-3 less. On top of that 65 is above what they test it at, and you aren't doing 100% highway mileage. You will NEVER get 35, be happy you are getting 30, i get between 26 and 31.

the results from my Matrix begs to differ. We CONSISTANTLY got 28-32 MPG around town and 35-38 HWY. 40 MPG once! And that was without babying it, too. It was 'rated' at 28 city 34 hwy and we ALWAYS got at least that and most of the time, more.
You are right though...30 isn't bad....for an H2!

My AUTO xB on 225/40/18" Chromes with subs in the trunk still puts out 33mpg on average... No complaints here.

Many people get EPA mileage. It is possible but its all how you drive. My tC is rated at 22 city and 29 hwy I think. I drive about 2/3 highway and get about 28 and I have gotten as high as 31 with all highway mileage. I go 85 most of the time too. Its not so much the high speed that kills the mileage its the hard acceleration. You need to drive smoothly.

Just did a 1400 mile roadtrip and averaged 32 mpg. I'm very happy with that.
