View Full Version : Front license plate questions

i absolutely hate having my front plate on; i think it ruins the look of the front of the car, and i dont want to have to mount it. however, the dealership i bought my car from was nice enough to drill two large holes in the front of my car to mount the plate.

i have two questions, first, i know there was some site i saw a while ago that sold color-matched plugs for those holes, does anyone have a link?

and second, is there a way to mount the plate like this:

http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/975/dsc020045xs.jpg

i can ziptie the bottom holes to the grille, but there really isnt anything to attatch the top to to prevent it from falling back. it fits snugly in there, but not secure enough to drive around with it like that. the only thing i can think of now is duct tape or something. any other ideas?

ideally i want to run no plate at all; i had no front plate on my eclipse for 3 years and was only hastled once. however, i just want to have something there just in case. even a fix-it ticket would be a pain to have to deal with.

Good idea with mounting the plate behind your grille, but that's still just as illegal as not having a plate at all. The same goes for sticking the plate near your windsheild... It's still a license display violation.

At least it's a cheap one, though. I figure I can eat a $35.00 citation and grudgingly put my plate back on, rather scratch up my dashboard.

There's also another member on here with a nice custom bracket, you could look through some of the user profiles for him. His license plate is mounted to the lower grille (outside) and looks pretty clean.

Oh, another thing. If you really do want to mount your plate behind the lower grille, get a full plate (attaches by four screws) license plate bracket. Attach your plate to that, then get a pair of small L-brackets from your local hardware store. You would have to screw it on from the underside of or the back of the bumper, but it would at least make it stand up.

That's where i got mine from. I could have probably built it myself with a trip to the hardware store, but I figure if someone goes out and sponsors the site, why not kick them a little money in return.

Sweet...I was going to get one of those but I forgot the website. I just ordered mine. Hows it working out for you?

Ive heard in TX that sometime soon a law will pass where we wont have to have the front license plate n e more? Can any1 confirm that?

I told my salesman if they drilled into my front bumper I wouldn't take delivery of the car.

As for how it's working... pretty well. I think I have it too close to my bumper, as it has rubbed just a little on the bumper from blowing back. I'm going to take the plate off next weekend, wax the box really well and put a rubber bumper on the back of of the plate to prevent further damage.

I told my salesman if they drilled into my front bumper I wouldn't take delivery of the car.

i would have loved to have that option, but was pretty hard to get a hold of an RS1. they would sell out within a day or two of arriving on the lot, and every one we saw was already sold by the time we went there.

and meh, if having it there is illegal too, i'll just go without it entirely. its not that big of a deal really. and i ordered the plugs from that site, so they should be here soon.

well, cfusionpm, i am in san diego too and for the last year, i've been running my car without my front plate and never had any problem even when i was pulled over.

well, in my old car, the only time i was bothered was when i spun out in the rain on a freeway offramp. my car was stuck in some mud, and i was just waiting for a tow truck to arrive when some patrollers just pulled over to see if i was ok and wait there with me. when i was about to drive away the cop said with kind of a sarcastic attitude "dont forget your front plate next time, partner." other than that, i got pulled over twice for speeding, and neither time did they mention the lack of front plate.

The cops were i live dont really pay too much attention to things like this. I have the license plate behind the front windshield, and i know many people who do the same and dont get in trouble for it. It just depends were you live, i guess.

I'm in DFW. I've never, ever used a front plate though its the law. The police should never pull you over unless you are doing something else wrong, than he/she would tack on the front plate violation. Then again I would'nt know, I dont get pulled over (thanx to my belltronic :P )

It's tough around here, our cops around here even went to my high school walked around the parking lot and gave people tickets for violations on their vehicle.......then proceeded to wait at the exit of the school parking lot to get people when they were leaving school.

If I were you, I'd skip the ones from bumperplugs.com. I looked at them a while ago for a different car and their color matching chart said to use the same color for a gold car as for a dark gray car. Obviously their "matching" is pretty loose. Also, they were made for quite big holes and their solution was to drill out the hole bigger. Um, no thanks.

Instead, I went to the local hardware store and bought some little plastic caps that fit perfect in the size of hole that was already in my bumper. I then took some touch up paint and painted those to match the car exactly. Since I already had the paint, it cost less then a dollar compared to bumperplugs.com’s $25/pair.

If you had ur licence plate like in the pic. above (attached to the lower grill) and if you bottomed out, would there be a chance of the licence plate catching and ripping off your grill; or worse, you entire bumper?

Also, I saw a pic on cardomain of someone with a BCP tc and the licence plate was fixed to the lower grill. But he/she trimmed the top & bottom of the licence plate so it would fit snuggly in. You can still see the letters clearly so dunno if any cops would give you a problem with this. I would post a pic, but I dunno the rules about posting pics of someone elses car.

The bracket is flush with the ground effects lip. Im not sure if it would catch if the car didnt have the ground effects. I have never rubbed on anything, but then again I am very careful. The bumper plugs stand out to much. Some bondo $7 and paint $5 and the holes r gone!

I found some extra plugs used to cover the screws when I built my bookcase . I used Touch-Up paint to color them. Then just glued them to my bumper. Who cares if I used glue on the bumper. If and when I have to put the plate back on, it will cover it up. :P Cost? Practically nothing since I had all the parts.

i heard about the license plate law in texas..but thought it was just a rumor or something...so it's true then? good..cuz i took my plate off a few weeks ago..and have been a lil worried about being pulled over..i guess i don't have to worry anymore haha!

I notified quite a bit of dealers to say call me as soon as a 06 pw xb arrives, and DO NOT drill holds in the bumper. It took about two weeks and then one came off the truck two hours from my house... I drove straight down there, the salesperson had a sold sign on it with my name with no holes!

In northern CA you can get away with no plate pretty easy... I have been doing it for years... I will say it is easier as you get older... the younger you are it seems the more trouble you get in, which means they will also write ya up for no front plate along with the real reason they pulled you over for.

I'm gonna run my plate on the large xb visor, it fits perfect... not sure that would work with a tc ( probably a much smaller visor ).

Ive found that if you get pulled over for a kind of BS ticket and you are really cool with the cop they will give you the fix it ticket instad of the traffic violation. It benefits you to have something they can give you a fix it ticket for. Its worked for me at least 3 times. If you arent cool, theyll probably give you the violation and the fix it ticket so always be cool with cops!

I got the bracket from 808customs as well. A few things to mention.

A) If you're not lazy, you could make something yourself from a hardware store ;)

B) The Majority of the pieces (two bolts, 2 large washers, two nuts) are not rust-resistant, so if you live somehwere where rust happens (Ohio for example) you'll wanna paint those babies. The mounting bracket is sheet aluminim, so no worries there.

3) The bracket has worked for 1k miles with 0 problems. I used lock washers and a little thread lock, and I've had no slippage or parts falling off at high speeds. Love the bracket :)

can u please post links to where you got this? Sorry I'm skeptical but I've been following the licence plate issue for a while and it seems like every so often an amendment is written but never passed. Thanx. If this is true, I'll have to cancel my 808 bracket!!

i found it at another forum http://fordbastards.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=430

also, when i found this out i took out my license plate and been driving it around w/ no front license plate for about a month and haven't gotten pulled over. i drove by many cops too, i'm suprise that i didn't get pulled over by the cops for having a radar lol but i guess the radar blends in with the center console where i mounted it at the top of the dash instead of hanging it on the window like other people lol.
