Hey guys, I don't have an xB but my boss does. He says that pretty much 90% of the time getting gas, the gas pump nozzle falls or bumps out during a fill.

We're in NJ, with full service, so often the attendant will put the nozzle in, start it, walk away, and then the gas handle will pop out a little and the gas will stop.

I know this happens to most cars from time to time, but he said it happens to him every time, if not twice each time. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it just a NJ thing?

Its a common problem with early 2005 and before xBs. The nozzle doesnt actually fall out, but the gas does stop. There is a TSB out on it, and if the car is in the VIN range, the dealer will fix it for free. This thread has the related info:

http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4203

And from that thread:

TSB EG049-04 November 19, 2004
Fuel Nozzle Clicks Off Before Tank Is Full
Applicable Vehicles: 2004-2005 model year Scion xA and xB vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

Scion xA Takaoka Plant JTKKT6#4#50103217
Scion xB Takaoka Plant JTLKT3#4#50202999
Scion XB Central Plant JTLKT3#4#54007594

To expand on this, the TSB calls for the replacement of the following components:

Fuel Tank, replace 77001-52080 with 77001-52180
Fuel Filler Pipe, replace 77201-52170 with 77201-52270
Exhaust Pipe Gasket 17451-21030 (Exhaust has to be removed to remove tank)
Compression Springs (2) 90501-35036 (only if free length of spring doesn't meet spec)
Check Valve Gasket 77177-33010

When you're taking your car in for this work, be sure that you run the tank almost empty. No tech likes to have to deal with 10 gallons of gasoline!

Can't say i've seen a full service gas station in NE Florida since late 80's ~ early 90's. Lucky you.

Thank God. Now to find the dang time to get to the dealership.

Oh, and thanks for posting the info and link, Max. That's mighty cool of you!

In Oregon, it is against the law to pump your own gas.....

WingspanTT, That TSB should solve the problem!
