“There is no such thing as cheap HP”
Ok so I have been looking around scionlife all night and I have found out lots of great info about moding the car. I am not quite the mechanic that allot of you seem to be yet I still want to turbo or SC my tC. I would like to do it right and if that means I have to buy a ton of books and read all night for the next year I will lol.
So I have a few questions,
What are some good resources to get a noob up to snuff on our tC’s engine?
After that I think I might be ready to learn about correctly boosting my tC, and good books on that sort of thing?
I have heard a quote while looking around on this board I think its something like “There is no such thing as cheap HP” and from looking at some of the setups I can see that’s vary true lol.
Can someone that knows what there talking about tell me what it will take to push out 250HP at the wheels? I want to get an idea how much it will cost to do this the right way, I am looking to have a car that’s as stable as possible. (I guess I should have got a faster stock car
)

cheap horse power comes from F/I cars, not N/A....cars like that get 80hp from an ECU upgrade.....
Our engine is the same as a Camry's. There are alot of resources regarding the engine....finding it is another story....
Also, the only way to get 250hp is to turbo. Learning about that and the experience of others on this board and a few others is probably one of the only ways that you'll get everything right.....

Hey, you're in my neck of the woods! Anywho, have you followed the Dezod turbo thread?

They are beating that car up to make sure the kit is done right. They seem to almost be there! Anywho, following are some links you might wanna check out:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question122.htm
Old link but funny: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~economou/turbo.html
Lots of links to read through: http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Performance/turbo-super.htm
Hopefully thats enough to get you started. There is a lot of info out there search engines are your friend! Just be careful what you put faith in, this is the internet.

Think of an engine as a giant air processor. More air in/out, faster the motor. Intakes, Header, and Exhaust setups move the air more efficiently, while cams and timing adjustments allow the engine to take bigger breaths of air each time. Turbochargers compress the air going in, literally forcing more air into the motor.
The only time you'll get "cheap HP" is either with a high-displacement motor (4.0L +) or with boost.
High displacement motors process tons of air by nature, so percentage increases in airflow lead to larger gains. Boosted motors can usually easily add a few pounds of boost with relative safety, which again, leads to much more air being processed.

But I myself plan on going turbo... alot more fun and more of a instant boost, and go do alot more with it.
the fundamentals are the same for any motor......just look for books about the subject to gain a back ground info on the different options. For the little tricks of the motor call as many companies that sell those options for your car as you can, take notes, and you will find out who knows what they are talking about....... remember there are three options.........1 fast 2 cheap 3 reliable........ but you can only pick two of them.
Sure there is. Buy a 30 year old beater with a big carburated V8. I used to have a '73 mach 1 mustang that I only paid $700 for, and after maybe another $500 in parts it was turning 13's in the quarter mile, just shy of 300 horses...
It wasn't much to look at but it really hauled...

Is it Mad Max or the Road Warrior where the sign at the garage says "Speed is just a question of MONEY. How FAST do you want to go?"
I like Nemesis' Pick 2 analogy also...

S/C your better off having the dealer do it so its under full warranty... Read somewhere that one dealer is charing like 400.
Turbo depends on the area and who you have around that actually knows what they are doing.

If you plan on doing a turbo yourself and want to read up on them, get the book called 'turbochargers' published by HP Books. It has a ton of info and some pretty crazy set-ups too. It is an older print, but it will give you everything you NEED to know about the TURBO ITSELF. It does NOT, however, have specific installations for a tC, but it is a great book.
I, myself, would go with the SC...can't go wrong with the factory installed parts (warranty..LOL), but it is limited as to what can be done.
