so last night i am driving all of a sudden i start smelling rubbery burned smell so i pull over open the hood next thing i know its smoking so i wait and wait about an hour or so than i start driving maybe after 2 miles driving when i switch gears its not settling in all that good and the rpm is going crazy up and its in gear and takings its time to go faster.. ok so i leave the car parked overnight i am driving it today everythings good until i start smelling that rubbery smell again like i've been spinning tires but i haven't been...the engine isn't smoking the smell is not strong like last night but i can still smell it the red light wasn't on last night and not today so i don't know if its the engine overheating i switch gears between 2500 and 3500 rpm i've scheduled an appointment on tuesday but does anyone have an idea of what is going on?

Sounds like a clutch problem to me.(not that I know much) If it is, you should be able to get on it a little and feel it slip. It just started for no reason, no giant hills or sitting in traffic?

Your clutch... she is dead. Unless your tension on the clutch plate is WAY out of whack, and your dealership can prove that it was screwed up before it started slipping... You're buying a new clutch and probably a new flywheel. How long have you had your car? How many miles do you have on it? Have you ever driven a car with a clutch before?

i've had it for a little over a week now almost 600 miles on it my last car was a stick and i've had that car for over 3 years and no clutch problems.....THIS SUX...but now i've driven the car everything seems to be going ok just the smell keeps coming back if i have to replace the clutch than i'll probably go with an aftermarket one any suggestions? and cost?
How much is factory clutch replacement?
I don't know if anything is out for Scion yet in the aftermarket but I would look at ACT or Cusco / Exedy clutches

Do this:
Cruise around and get up to forth gear once your at a 2500 rpm in forth slam it down to third and pop the clutch if it doesnt slip your clutch is allright.

I used to work at goodyear for about 5 years and that is the way we used to test clutches. If it slips doing that you pretty much know the thing is done.

i'll test it and see if that happens but so far the clutch has been working fine since this happened but the smell is still coming its not real bad but i can still smell why do you think the smell is lingering around?
