My engine cover was painted. The VVT-i/Toyota was the decal that I bought from randode.

did you use high temp paint or will krylon fusion do the job? i have a can of fusion lying around and i might as well put it to good use if i can.

It was fushion that I used. The blue center piece was krylon fushion but at the time of painting it I could not find fushion in pure white. So the white is the actually krylons competitor called Rustoleum plastic paint which works exactly the same. As for the temperature, it only makes the paint better. When I first put the cover back on the engine, it had a sort of rubbery painted feel to it. After one drive around town, it felt like colored plastic. You can feel the paint at all.
I only used one coat on the blue. I used 4 coats total on the white. In between each coat, I let it dry for about a day either in the sun or withing non-burning distance of a heat dish used for heating porches and stuff. The reason I gave it so long in between coats is after the first coat, it had a major rubbery feel and I thought I had ruined it after putting the second coat on. On the can itself it says to let completely dry for 24 hours so I tried it and the finished second coat felt better.
So all I can really say is take your time. You are not painting a fender or anything like that. Remember that this cover could be out of the car for a week and nobody would know the difference. Dont rush it. I spent 7 hours alone just preparing to paint, photoshoping different designs, the cleaning the cover thoroughly, then taping it off (3 hours), then finding the right damn paint.
