Default Defected Seatbelts? (ITS STUCK!)

Well just 30 minutes ago my cousin couldnt get out of the passenger seat because the seatbelt wouldnt release but after awhile it released but when he got back on it did the same thing but is not releasing now.. well is this some kind of anti-theft thing? or is it just broken. i doubt its anti theft because its the passenger seat.

but tomorrow im going to go to the dealer to see what is up and will report on the matter so other people with this problem will know what to do.

but anyways any idea why this is happening peeps?

it shouldnt be broken, if you've ever looked at a seatbelt assembly taken out of a car, (at least in the ones i've seen) there is a small metal ball bearing inside the plastic assembly that is controls a springloaded gear. the gear has teeth that automatically retracts due to the spring tension. depending on the position of that ball bearing, it can "jam" the gear and not allow it to retract or be pulled.

the reason its done like this is so if you have a sudden jolt (i.e. an accident or something similar) the ball bearing will be disturbed and jam the seatbelt in place, holding you in your seat. hard to visualize probably, but if you reset the ball bearing inside it will go back to normal. unless you take out the seatbelt assembly i would just recommend jiggling at the seatbelt again and again until it works.

this also happens to my xb...passenger side only...it's not right if the belt is constantly locking up. my old honda crv had this simular problem until i demanded that it be replaced...never to have the problem again in the last 100,000 mile that i owned the car. i will be going to toyota about the locking seatbelt.

Mine does that on the drivers side. It won't release me and I have to keep pushing it down really hard. My fiance is taking it down soon to have it looked at.
