Car Insurance after turbo/sc ?
Just wondering for those who have put turbo's or superchargers on your cars, do you guys tell your insurance companies about them to have them covered? Or just bite the bullet on them if something were to ever happen?
If your insurance company covers auto accessories, then I would highly recommend getting it covered. I don't think they will see it as turning it into a sport car (therefore substantially increasing your insurance rate). I think it would be looked upon as if you just added a set of rims to the car. For the most part, all you would really need to do is tell them what you bought (which I doubt they are going to know what half this stuff is), and just produce a bill of sale for them, and you are good to go. I think instead of saying I paid $3k for a turbo, I would say, I paid $500 for a new manifold, $100 for a wastegate, $$, for intake plumbing...etc. Break it all down, works out better that way, JMO.

its funny how this came up...I just got off the phone with my insurance agent(good friend of my family) from State Farm...I asked him the good old "What if" question...He told me that when it comes to things like a supercharger or turbo, the company will cover only a certain amount...lets say you get into an accident, and you have a factory warrantied supercharger, the TMV(total market value) for the car doesnt really go up by much...maybe a couple hundred bucks in the eyes of an insurance company...so in regards, they do cover it, your insurance premiums shouldnt go up, but dont expect much in return if the car gets totalled. Kind of crappy if you ask me being that I spent a lil over 3 g's for everything and Im out that if I get into an accident
I have Progressive. And there is an option you can elect to cover those extra mods. The guy said that the first $1k mods is covered for free. I just have the beater on their right now, so didn't opt for this extra coverage.
there was a big thread about this but I can't find it. Generally nowadays insurance companies don't account for adding power to your car (ie SC) to increase your premium. and if anything, don't ask, don't tell.
damn, my insurance is high enough to even think about telling them anything. lol. seriously though. i have the cheapest insurance i can find and it still blows peoples minds to hear how much i pay. and i have no points or tickets of any sort on my record. im just 19, live in new jersey, and drive a 06' "sports coupe"
state farm has a ryder available for your policy, as most higher end insurance companies do, that covers mods.......usually its like 15-20.00 per month, it basically extends the coverage to cover the actual cash value of the items not market value which includes depreication........
ive had to do this for my last show truck, i had to have coverage up to 40,000 for a 98 chevy truck, so my paint, system, air ride, and my rims were covered........
i know AAA uses the market value, not acutal cash value, so they factor in depreication, even on stereos........

Actually thats one nice thing about Turbonetics' kit. They cover the whole kit from any damage. If you wreck your car and the kit is damaged they replace the damaged parts free of charge. They already did for one g owner who totalled his G35 a couple weeks after installing the kit. He bought another G35 and Turbonetics replaced all the damaged parts free of charge.
we have Am Fam; have had for years. We increased the value of our car 4k, to make sure the sc ( plus a couple other items ) were "covered". The piece of mind was worth the few bucks. For us, that only meant an increase of about 7 per month. But keep in mind my age, and even with all the racing around from the old days--a perfect record ( i'm knocking on wood as I speak ). It's also i'm sure lower due to all the other policies we have with them. I'm sure if my teen daughter were to insure this car, that could be a different story. This shouldn't be classed as a sports car; but some companies will think of anything to get your hard earned cash--especially from the younger drivers out there.
With all the companies marketing on the web now; it's pretty easy to research and compare from home.

Easy, don't tell the insurance and it won't be covered by insurance. Usually, even with front end accidents the actual turbo comes out ahead with no damage because of how it sits. Other parts for the turbo aren't so lucky, but usually with turbo companies they will cover the turbo for a year or so. Just don't do anything stupid and you should be fine. If you are that worried about it don't spend the money and buy a turbo.
FYI: Insurance can go up extremely high if you have them cover the turbo.

It all depends on which insurance company you are with! Some will cover it and jack the price way up, others cover without jacking up premium, and some just wont cover it!
For instance my insurance company (USAA) does not add any type of insurance for any type of aftermarket part, but they do cover them! When I called and asked about aftermarket insurance I was told that all I have to do is keep the reciepts from the parts and if I get in an accident the insurance will cover the price on the reciept! Now I also took down the date and the name of the agent who told me that so that if an issue came up I could tell them which agent told me this!
