Default Fuel Grade?

I thought the Scion xB runs on regular unleaded and not premium. On fueleconomy.gov, it lists it as regular, but on the timing belt or timing chain thread, someone says it is 91 octane instead of 87 octane.

When we bought our xB, every question we asked had to be re-asked to the manager. EVERY QUESTION. And the bad thing was that the salesman owned an xB himself and still couldn't answer the questions! I have nothing against you Peruzzi, but I really wish Toyota would do more to educate their sales staff.
I understand this is a 'friendly' bet between two co-workers, and commend you for getting an answer and learning about the cars, but what if it had been a customer asking about the timing chain? It just seems that Toyota is happy with letting the sales staffs get by with 'just memorizing' the broshures and there is SOO much more info that buyers want.

BTW...you never mentioned it...which did YOU think it was before this thread? LOL
I guess this person was misinformed, unless something has changed that I am not aware of. That was one of the reasons, I picked the xB, cause it used regular unleaded instead of premium. I searched other threads and found that is only requires 87 octane. Not sure where x_rayted711 found out about the wrong fuel. People have said the owners manual says 87 octane. I have never seen an owners manual yet, but from my research, I always thought it was regular unleaded. Please correct me if I am wrong.

the xA and xB need regular (87)

Nods, x_rated711 was taken out of context. The 1.5L xB uses 87 octane. From what I understand the JDM model 1.1 and 1.3 versions use a different octane. For the USDM release of the 1.5L it's always been 87.

dgHotLava, Thanks for correcting me on the car make in question.
x_rayted711, sorry for the misinterpretation. I thought we were talking about the Scion xBs and didn't realize you were talking about the XRS.

I personally put midgrade in my box. She seems to be much happier on that and gets a little bit better gas milage.

the thing that kills me is how people will PAY more in gas to get BETTER gas mileage... if you stop and think about it... you will be paying for the miles the same.

i run 89 but only because its cheaper here. 87 works just fine. and for clarification sproket, i believe in Japan they have 1.3 and 1.5, not 1.1 and 1.3. The 1.5 is the upgrade engine vs. the 1.3

He may have said 91 research octane which translates to 87. I got confused about this subject when I got my new bike and the owners manual started talking about fuel in terms of research octain. I researched the subject and found out I actually needed to run 93 octain because of the high performance nature of the beast.

My bad Scott... good call that. Still just a yearling on the box knowledge.

i ended up using 91 or 93 octane moving out to WA from VA because of the mountain passes. Other than that its back down to mid grade. I would pay the .3 or .5 cents extra for midgrade anyways....
