View Full Version : Quaife ATB Differential
canibusx 01-30-2006, 07:42 PM I emailed Quaife america and they said they will have a differential ready in about 4 months. This was one thing I was worried about before getting my tc. I just had surgery so i can't go order mine just yet but now it's a sure thing i will be getting one! Sorry if this was posted already but i didn't see it and wanted to let you guys know.
hunterUnknown 01-30-2006, 07:53 PM yeah there are a number of posts on quaife's lsd.
terra_tC 01-30-2006, 08:02 PM its good that we have an approx time tho
TheQuietThings 01-31-2006, 12:49 PM repost
lock
canibusx 01-31-2006, 03:59 PM I don't see in any other posts a time frame for this being released......
nodsetse 01-31-2006, 06:05 PM Anyone heard anything about potential pricing? I've seen various Quaife applications go from $500 to $1500, so it'd be nice to know what we'll have to pay for the tC's unit.
hunterUnknown 01-31-2006, 08:20 PM probably something around 800. but who knows.
io333 02-01-2006, 11:56 PM I'd love to see a diff with lower gearing -- say 2100@70mph

differentials do not change the gearing of the car, they simply determine which wheel is getting more power.

ok let me rephrased what i said. i thought you were on the same page as the rest of us.
a LIMITED SLIP differential won't change the gear ratios.
http://www.houseofthud.com/differentials.htm#limited%20slip
they have a lot of information describing open, locking, and limited slip differentials.

Wouldn't that be nice? Performance would decrease, but gas milage would improve. Always a trade-off somewhere...
yamaha16bw 02-02-2006, 01:48 AM Give it time and ZPI will have there 6-speed and I'm sure that will be on thier minds while R&D is being done. Cruisin the highway at 3600-4000 rpm's is alittle for me.

the limited slip differential would replace the stock open differential. and since the design of the differential is what determines the final drive ratio, an LSD could be designed with a longer final drive.

i'm sorry guys, you're totally correct.
Whoops! lol
but thinking about that, wouldnt it change the ratio on all of your gears? and you would lose quite a bit of performance?
i have an auto tranny, and i personally would like to see shorter gears.

You really think they'll make one? If so, I'd bet it'll be cost prohibitive for most people. I'd settle for a higher (lower numerically) 5th gear, if such were available and didn't cost too much to install.

by my settling for a higher 5th gear, youre settling for 4 other higer gears as well...

No, I'm not. Changing the 5th gear out without changing the final drive gear would leave the other gear ratios the same.

then you would have to change one of your spider gears, and replacing the open differential with an LSD wouldnt do anything for you as far as gear ratios are concerned.
yamaha16bw 02-03-2006, 01:16 AM If you check out ZPI's website you will see where they are already working ont a 6-speed for the tC.

i believe that they are, but that is going to cost some big bucks.
tC_Brett 02-03-2006, 02:17 AM Here's a good site to visit if someone wants to know how a differential works.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm
Also, a spider gear dosen't change gear ratio either. All a spider gear does is help to change the speed of one of the wheels. In order to change the 5th gear ratio, you would need to change the 5th speed gear. You would have to find one made for the same transmission as the tC.
Does anyone know what other toyota vehicles use the tC manual trans?

The "just change out 5th gear" idea is pretty appealing to me, although I think 1st is too low anyway. I just want to go the cheapest route. My #1 concern is to get the tach down about 800 rpm when highway crusing. Acceleration/LSD/etc are all secondary to me. I'd also love to keep the factory warranty when doing it -- say, for example if a dealer could get the different 5th gear and change it out for $750 or so.
canibusx 02-03-2006, 04:36 PM Say i get the supercharger... will it be easy to break the tires loose with 200hp? I plan on getting headers, pulley and other stuff. Actually i should probably order my car first...
Why did this get moved to N/A forum?

youll break lose in every gear except 4th from what ive heard. 1st is a joke, 2nd youll still peel, and 3rd youll chirp.
The discussion here about replacing gears for speed is NA talk. would you like me to move it to suspension and handeling?
canibusx 02-03-2006, 06:07 PM I'd say put it in suspension/handling. As soon as i get my check tuesday i'm heading up to the dealer and order my car, by the time i get it i may have enough for the supercharger. I can only hope Quaife will make a good diff. for this car. This will be my first decent horsepowered FWD car. I've always had posi rear ended v8s.
TheQuietThings 02-03-2006, 06:09 PM okey doke moving to suspension

io333 03-23-2006, 04:05 AM Wow. Same gear ratio I assume, or are there options?
ScionBandit 03-23-2006, 11:15 AM yup, that quote hes got is correct
got that same reply from them.....ordering a few sets for my dealer to stock

The LSD does not affect your ratios, these are completely separate aspects of the tranny.
