Default Strange Smell

Hello and greetings. I have been "breaking in" my new Tc, it only has 65 miles on it, with a few short trips. When I return and park the car in the garage I can notice a strange smell. What is this. Am I riding the clutch too much or what? I am also getting used to the clutch, but I have not been to hard on it. How long should I wait before letting the engine rev a little?

Thanks for your help gang.

Oh stop whining. Just take a deep breath. Toyota has been ranked above average in new car smell toxicity.

Its got the TRD exhaust, could that be the smell. It is kind of a burning smell. Is it the exhaust?

A lot of the parts under your hood and on your exhaust have been touched by human hands. It will produce a burning smell at first due to the oils from that and other particles that build up. If the smell continues for a long time then have it checked..

Is it a strong smell somewhat like burned rubber, but not quite that? That would be more like the clutch, but you would smell that right away as it happened. If it is a fainter smell of something burnt.. almost a musty smell or a smell of burned paint it is likely what I mentioned above.

If it smells like badly burnt flesh....... well, you may have a dead body under the hood Sorry, had to add that

dont worry about it, its something (i forgot what) that they put in the coolant (or something like that i also forgot) to keep the in top shape just in case it sits on the lot a long time. dont worry after some trips it will all be burned away.

i know this becuase i ask about the smell after test driving.

^lol. Seriously though, I remember my brakes smelled for the first few 100 - 200 miles. Also most exhasts have a smell when they are new which lasts a while as well. When I put my exhaust on my honda, it gave off a smell similar to burning plastic for a couple weeks then it disappeared. I'd say wait a bit and see if the smell subsides.

About the clutch, just remember, if your not actively shifting, take your foot completely off the clutch pedal and rest it on the side. Try to make this a habit. It'll prevent you from accidently riding the clutch.

Also, some parts get coated with Cosmolene or like sprays to keep corrosion at bay during the trip on the boat.
It takes a while to burn off - mine stunk for about 500 miles or so.
Also, sometimes when they change oil some can drip on parts like the exhaust manifold which will burn a while...
