Quick question about aftermarket exhausts and inspection
Here in NY when you used to get an inspection, your car sat on a dyno with a thing on the tail pipe that tested the emissions. I was told that since newer cars have an inspection sticker with the barcode, they dont need to be dynoed. The inspector plugs into the cars ecu and gets wat he needs. Now this is what I was told so correct me if Im wrong. My question is how do you guys who run exhausts with now cats pass inspection? Does the car not having to be dynoed have something to do with it or do u all jus kno somebody or what. Sorry for the noobie question.
basically, they could fail your for a visual inspection, but if they just plug you in, you should be able to pass as long as you still have the oem exhaust manifold installed. They basically check the o2 sensor to make sure the precat is doing its job. But the car will really have no idea if the second cat is present or not. Your best bet is to go to someone you know and you should be ok, provided your not throwing a cel.
if you have no cel (i.e. antifouler) you should be able to pass the plug in test since the antifouler is making the rear o2 sensor read proper levels. A friend of mine did it with his mustang with no cats and managed to pass. I still need to see it for myself though. If you still end up failing, you could just reinstall your oem one and retest. A little annoying though.
