I searched the forums and found my answer, 4 quts., but just wanted to ask if anyone has done there own oil change before? Reason I ask, I did my first oil change at 1,200 miles, and after draining all the oil out, only 3 quarts of oil came out. Is this normal for a "new" car? Just curious.

If you fit a quart of oil in that tiny filter, your better then i am at doing magic tricks.

4 quarts of oil for the engine.

There is going to be residue left on mostly all of the surfaces & in the oil pump, lines, filter. etc.

I'd recommend switching to Synthetic, like Mobil 1.

Best to change your oil about 45 min after you finish driving, warmer oil flows better but the oil system in the engine will have pressure in it 15 min after driving, telling you that the oil galleys are still full.

Change the oil on a level surface, so the drain plug really is the lowest point on the engine. Leave for a while after pulling the plug so you drain as much as possible. The oil filter will hold 300mL, aftermarket ones may be larger capacity. In my opinion, its really cheap insurance to change the filter every time. More expensive oil filters generally offer similar filtration ability, but the internals such as the oil bypass spring and diaphragm may be of superior quality. Cold climates during the cold months really should use the more expensive filters, so the diaphragm will actually seat and let the filter filter, rather than bypass and just circulate around. I used to have a link to a comprehensive oil filter cut apart and see whats inside study. I'll try to find it if I can.

That's one of them, the one I was thinking of was a lot less professional as far as the site that's hosting it. Some machinist on the DSM boards had cut apart about 60 different filters and measured filter area along with case thickness and materials. I can't find it as the dsm.org site seems to have issues, and I have about 90% of all web sites blocked here at work so I don't happen to stumble on a picture of a girl in a sumo suit somewhere :roll: .

Its basicly the same info though. His conclusion was that the frams were a$$ and purolator makes a decent one, along with two crappy ones if I recall right. He also noted that the mobil 1 and the other $12 filters appeared to be superior, although that he could not test to see if they justified the price.
