i don't know if this is just me, but my steering wheel stereo controls have always been difficult to use. like you press them with a light touch part of the way in without looking, thinking you're changing the station or volume and nothing happens. but then you have to press it again, only harder. or then you just start pressing really hard on each volume change. and then you start to think...do i need to eat more wheaties?
so when i pulled the module off the steering wheel to change the leds i decided to see what was the deal and fix it for good. and if there was no problem, start doing some thumb exercises.
seems the black buttons need to push small white plastic pistons which then press the plastic "blister" cover that creates the contact to the circuit board. anyway the blister itself requires a small bit of pressure, but the black plastic button to white piston movement require 1/8" before you even get to the blister. the reason why you stop pressing the button when you aren't thinking about it is because you only made the piston travel to the top of the blister...and a light touch makes it feel like that is good enough. so then you fell like you need to do more weight training.
so long story short, i have some felt adhesive, like for under furniture or craft projects, cut it to the size of the piston (about 1/8" square)and placed it between the black plastic button and the white piston. when you lift the white pistons out there will be grease on them, just wipe it off so the adhesive will stick. replace the white pistons and you are good to go. that felt adds to the length of each button and places them right about on top of the blister when you reassemble.
i guess i'm just lazy, but i hated pressing that in so hard and now its like cake.
if you want pictures of how to take off the console, see this post on changing the led's.

oh and my lawyers say that if you want to do this mod you do it at your own risk. that i will not be responsible if you mess up your steering wheel , or if your airbag fails, or if you scratch yourself with the felt pads.
