So I've had my 06 5-speed for about 9 months now. Just broke 15,000 miles, and everything is current regarding routine maintenance and whatnot.
However, in the last several weeks, I've noticed that when I first start the car up, the engine idles around 2k rpms for the first couple minutes. Eventually, it will drop down to the 800-1k range, but not until the car has been running for 5 minutes or so.

Anyone else run into this? I figure I'll ask the dealer next time I'm there, but it's not particularly convenient, so I wasn't planning on going until I have more of a reason than this...

Mine does it. I can roll out of my driveway and disengage the clutch without even touching the gas. I can even go into second gear.

Our car starts in Open Loop, the ECU will ignore certain sensors. It takes a little bit for everything to warm up,especially o2 sensors. Then the ECU will start listening to the sensors again.

Not even close. It's just my first car that suddenly started exhibiting this behavior after several months of running perfectly normally.
I figured it was just a warming-up issue, but thought I might pose it to the group, on the off chance it was indicative of a problem that I was unaware of.

 

Just make sure you take it easy while it warms up.

 

i wait a minute to warm up sitting in the driveway. then i take off. then i dont hit 3k rpm or above until the temp gauge is in the middle.

you're just wasting gas when you idle your car for 5 minutes in the morning.

 

its normal, expecially on colder mornings. Like mentioned, it is running open loop and on high idle. Once it warms up a bit it should kick down

True. I used to wait for the heat gauge to go all the way up to where it's at during normal driving, but Scion reccomends you warm the car up with normal driving.

So now I do what DuMa does, and just baby it a little until it warms up all the way.

 

Normal just to warm up.

 

That behavior is perfectly normal. Im sure you just havent noticed it untill this point. Like everybody already said, its just the car warming up.

 

Its Normal .. I had a problem when it would idle at 2000 all day everyday. Boost leak =(
