i ran into a cocky kid in an 04-05 VW Golf GTI VR6 on the way to school today. he was speeding and weaving and acting hot ____ for about a mile. as luck would have it, i caught him lined up at a stop light to a freeway onramp. if you know of the area, its the south entrance to the 15 from clairmont mesa blvd. the light is a left turn; two staggered lanes. the outside lane is about a car-length ahead of the inside lane. i was on the inside, he on the outside. light turns green, i quickly ease it into first, and dont gun it untill i see we're about even (after the turn ended, and its now straight). we're totally even in 1st gear. as soon as i (very quickly) shift to second, and immediately put about half a car-length on him. redlining 2nd, im starting to pull more. into 3rd, im now a full car length ahead and still pulling. by this time, it seems he let off, and very quickly falls even more back. i didnt even hit 80 mph (i think), so it was pretty short.
i didnt know how much power those model GTIs had in either the 1.8T or VR6. i know i raced a VR6 (or at least one with a VR6 badge). and it had at least an aftermaeket exhaust. i looked up the stats for it and with a 2.8L 6 cylinder, the VR6 puts out 200 hp! so i was pretty impressed with my pokey little 160 horses (maybe 5-10 more with my intake/exhaust). iduno though, it seems like a double edged sword. i mean, yeah i beat a car with 200 hp, but its also a pretty heavy fat pig. i wouldnt pick on say, an rsx-s, who has not only a power advantage, but also weight advantage. anyway, fun times. i usually dont like racing and it was pretty much the first time. its kinda fun, since i almost never redline my car in daily driving. i know the car isnt terribly quick, but its comforting to know i can beat someone with more power. :)

One of my really good friends has a '03 GTi VR6 6-speed, with a CAI & good tires. We've raced several times.. It normally runs a 15.3-15.4 in the quarter
The car is pretty damn fast at 60+.. but before that (especially in 1st & 2nd gear) the car really isn't very fast. I'll beat him by 1-2 car lengths from 0-60 in my tC (I/H).. but if we go from a roll starting around 60 he will put 1-2 car lengths on me.
The VR6's have a really bad drive-by-wire system. when he trys to shift the car hard into second gear it hestitates and cuts out the gas for a split second, enough to really slow it down on the 1-2 shift. The GIAC chip takes care of this problem and I think he would beat me if he had that done.
Also, for being so small, it's a rather heavy car, it weighs 100lbs. more then the tC.

fusion, you should know a tc is not really 160hp. average 140 at the wheel.

A VR6 will eat up a RSX Type S (http://users.adelphia.net/~hkspeed/RSX-S%20vs%20VR6.wmv) . I used to own a GTI VR6, so I guess I'm biased. lol.

Thank god for 3rd gear lol.

I was actually looking at getting a GLI 6-speed with the VR6 engine before I found my tC. The Jetta may have more power, but I have not, for one second, regretted my choice. I love the tC.

I had a VR6 too. The 24v, 200hp version should destroy you, especially up top... unless the kid can't drive.

With a 0-60 time of 7.5 and a quarter mile of a mid 15, the VR6 will no way "destroy" a tC. the tC actually will win until around 60-70 MPH.. then it's about a 1-2 car difference.. definately not "destroying"
I've raced my friend at least 30 times, some of the street, some of the track.. either way he never can pass me until around 80-90mph.

I can see an R32 destroying a tC but not a standard VR6. I was in the market for one of those, the powers not that great, and if I remember right (my memory sucks) those little things are porkers...kinda like skylines!

Just wanna toss in my 2 cents, I came from the VW world into the Scion world. I owned several VW's including 3 corrados, and the last corrado i owned i put a vr6 in it. The new GTI Vr6's are quick, but they're limited to they're true potential (in stock form) by the gear box. The ratios are way to long in the stock transmission and it makes the car really slow until around 4500 in 2nd gear. My Corrado had the Corrado SLC (vr6) short ratio gear box, and holy crap, it would rip your head back into the seat.

yeah. i was just comparing flywheel hp, cuz i dont know what the vw puts to the wheels.
and yeah, it could very well be he was just some punk kid who doesnt know how to drive; i pulled on him half a car length each shift. shifting isnt rocket sciense though... there was no launch involved; it was just a 10mph 1st gear punch, how can you screw that up?

Yeah, the R32 would destroy a tC.. they run high 13s bone stock. but that's not even close to a VR6, the R32 has a larger engine with more power & AWD.

fusion, you should know a tc is not really 160hp. average 140 at the wheel.
And you should know the difference between WHP and BHP..
The VR6 is rated at 200hp and only puts down 170-175whp.
The tC is rated at 160hp and only puts down 140-145whp.

Check this out, the vr6 is a 6 cylinder, the rsx and tc are both four cylinders, for a tc or rsx to even touch the vr6 speed wise says alot on its on, to me the vr6 is slow stock wise, after some mods is another story though!

yea, modding a vr6 is kinda silly. throw a turbo on one of those and a shrick valve cover and youve got 530whp potential. and dont tell me its not possible, there is a Golf Rallye in NH, i believe its an 86, and its like a forest green color, but its got over 500whp, i believe it was 546whp, but im not 100% on that. I saw it last year at Waterfest in NJ

Do you mean shrick camshafts? I don't really think a valve cover is going to help very much.
The shrick 264 camshafts are $900-$1,100 and the gain is about 10-12whp. I don't think that's good at all.
I'm sure there were SEVERAL other things done to the car also.. Most likely adding up to $8k-$12k to get that type of power.. And it's even more if you want to be able to actually put that power down to the ground, not just have a dyno queen.
VR6 parts are ALOT of money, I haven't really found anything cheap for it.

VR6's are actually _____ES to mod, and while they make reasonable gains (better than many 4cylinders), they can't touch the HP per dollar of the 1.8T.
I had a 12v with a bunch of mods, and i think it's nuts that an I/H/E tC will dyno the same HP as a stock 12v VR. Granted, it's only got .4L of displacement more than my motor.
With a 1.8T... any old joe can buy a chip, N75, and a few turbo goodies and easily push 220-240whp. To do that with an N/A VR6 is extremely difficult... and to turbocharge any N/A motor takes a level of know-how, money, and attention far outside of the vast majority of modders. Combine that with the fact that no VR6 part is cheap, and there's no reason for how expensive it is.
For example, a VR6 MAF-sensor goes out. Replacement at VW- $300. If you're smart and resourceful, you notice that it's the same exact part as the MAF for a 2.0L, which will run you a cool $40. I ran a 2.0L MAF for nearly 2 years with no problems whatsoever.
Yes, there are some high-power VR's out there, but really, it's just an average V6 when it comes to boost. Compare the output of a VR6-T with say, a boosted mazda KLZE, a boosted toyota 1MZ (very impressive), or even a boosted hyundai V6 from the tiburon. This isn't knocking the motor, but I came to a number of reality checks when I owned one.
But hey... it sounds good.. and its an extremely unique layout. I just think it's only worth a damn when it's got 3.2L.
