This is the exhaust that is most likely to be found in your Scion dealer's parts department. TRD is a subsidiary of Toyota, so fit and finish of their products are almost always up to OEM standards -- this exhaust is no exception.
More of a cosmetic upgrade than a true performance improvement, but then again it is still an improvement. Exhaust tone is slightly louder, but not obnoxious. Idle note is deeper than stock, freeway drone is not too bad and full-throttle has a note of far more urgency.

Pricing is a little steep because it is sold through Scion dealerships, but you can occasionally find one online for around $250.00. Installation is straightforward and only takes a couple of minutes. Includes new gasket and all necessary hardware.

Pros: OEM Dealer option so can be financed with new vehicle, Toyota techs won't give you weird looks
Cons: OEM Dealer option pricing, everyone has one, not that much performance gain

Just installed the TRD axleback on my xB, apparently I needed a refresher course in why I hate exhaust work....

Coupla tips. Don't try to pull the nut off of the pipe clamp- it's welded on. Pull the bolt instead. Spray some water into the rubber hangers before trying to remove the muffler- a little lube goes a long way. Soapy water would probably work even better.

It fits perfectly, with the tip naturally centered in the opening, and it's really not very loud, at all. I'm actually kinda disappointed... I've read that they get a little louder with age, so we'll find out...

I went with the TRD unit to avoid warranty issues, and because I didn't want it to be *too* loud or ricey looking. It's neither...

I went with a Borla axleback. Not sure of the gains, it feels a little better. Its alot deeper than the stock exhaust, but not too loud. Of course, I kind of wanted louder so you knew I had a different exhaust, but if I rev it, those who own a stock xB can tell. I would recommend it, easy to install, came with a sticker (i did not put it on my box), and comes with instructions! Got it on eBay...give it a try.

 

I used to work for Borla Perf and they, at least back in 2000, made the TRD system. Given that that is still true i'd compare the price of those two kits. IMO i'd go with something cheaper as long as its a 'flow-through' design. The stock Scion exhaust is mandrel bent anyway so my guess is if your gunna keep the cats on (CA state legal at least) just replace the rear muffler. Save some flo $$$ if you dont have it to spend.

 

More TRD/ Borla info. It is true that the exhaust system will 'break-in' after time because the packing in the muffler will condense and not absorb as much sound (thus passing it through). As for worring about exhaust voiding your warranty, SEMA has lawyers that make sure there are laws in place to protect aftermarket parts manufacutres. To the best of my knowledge, law states that the aftermarket part would have to mechanically or in some logical way cause failure to a stock component. example. It is not logical that an exhaust system would cause your engine to 'throw' a piston or rod. In that sense they could not say that the vehicle (in whole) is out of warranty. Now if your muffler melts the rear fender then it could be justified that it was an out of warranty occurance. I'd suggest that you go to SEMA.org and educate yourself, it could help you as well the next time you get pulled over, it's not illegal to have aftermarket performance parts on your vehicle. most companies a registered though SEMA anyway so doing business with them is a good ideal.

 

What is the stock inlet pipe diameter? Is it 2.50, 2.25. or 2.00?? I've seen them all. What's stock??

 

Alright, this might be sad... So I just got my xb and I need some more power, I feel like im driving my go kart around town whats your best suggestion for a exaust? Im not to worried about the price anything works. Thanks!

 

Uh, no axleback exhaust for the xB is going to give you ANY noticeable power gains. The best axlebacks for the money are the Precision Muffler axleback and the Strup exhaust, IMO.

DC Sports single canister axleback, will be getting the cat-bakc as soon as it comes out

well not a large power gain, but def more pep, and much louder than stocker, especially after i put in my Injen sri. Good quality, very easy to install and remove, i take it out, clean it and reinstall every couple months. Def worth the mpney for what you get.

I have a DC Sports Axle-back exhaust too...I went to a muffler shop and got 2" piping installed as well....it's pretty sweet! Sounds good and you can feel a little more power.

im getting the TRD for my xA... and i am also getting a high-flow cat with resonator (magnaflow universal) to go with it. how much louder will that make the TRD exhaust? i have also ordered the Injen CAI.... all input welcome. thanks!

 

I think i have narrowed my options down to the GReddy or the Borla cat backs.

Anyone have any experience with the GReddy yet?

How are the Tanabe exhausts? Any word how well it matches with the Injen xb short intake?
