Hawaii?
Hey folks,
I got a call from my mom saying that her, my dad, and my little sister might be moving to Hawaii. I was wondering how it is over there...as a non-tourist. I've never been there...I was wondering about realistic cost of living versus Florida (or California..or something). Is it like a different world? I'm Filipino and I'm sure my parents can survive...but is there any street smarts I should know? lol
*shrug* I don't know what to ask... If someone can give me insight, that'd be great.
Thanks!

Cost of housing is not much more than the major cities of California... but cost of food is a lot more.
I went to college in LA and had 3 different apartments:
$2600, 4bd/2.5ba, 3 story townhouse
$2100, 2bd/2ba, medium-sized apartment
$1850, 2bd/2ba, large apartment
I think you can find things in Hawaii for less than that.
I know my sister had a 2 bedroom, small apartment for $1100... so yeah, not much difference in price.
Food on the other hand:
Purified water dispenser: 25c CA/ 50c HI
Marie Calenders: $2 CA/ $4 HI
Naked Orange Juice: $3.50-gal CA/ $6 half-gal HI
Soda: as low as $1.79-12pk CA/ $2.99 if you're lucky HI
Gas: Similar
Fruits: A lot more
Milk: Almost 3x's as much in Hawaii

cost of living is f-n high. a lived there my whole life until i was 20. ended up going UTI in AZ and now i like it here. alot cheaper then back home. but you can take da boy from da island but not da island from da boy!
one thing i always tell my friends is to try and taste the tap water before they start buying bottled. the water here is so much cleaner then the mainland us. if you ever had fish as pets you'll understand why i say this: you don't need to de chlorinize the water or let it sit overnight. i just fill the tank up straight from the tap and throw the fish right in. that's how clean our water is. it's saved a bunch of my friends a lot of $$$ from buying bottled water.

negative on mainland water....*shudder* i miss our tap water
weird fact, the cleanest tap water in America comes from New York
oh and mikochu, filipino? you're gonna fit right in
just don't do the whole, i'm from the ghettos filipino thing....negative. i mean, why is it every time i go to pearlridge, i see some filipino "thugs?"
which island are you guys moving to?
/agree with whoever said you should look for a job before coming up though, that will help you a lot. the hardest part in hawaii is finding a job. i'm living in LA, and i didn't see any cost of living dif, cause i pay more for rent, but less for groceries....and freakin way more sales tax.
street smarts? try learn pidgeon yeah?

I believe my dad turned down the offer. The bump in pay won't compensate for the cost of living. And since my dad will be one of the top guys in the area (Hawaiian Islands, California, etc), he'd be worked like a dog, literally.
I hear Hawaiians hate Filipinos. I'm definitely not a "pinoy thug," though. lol.
Oh well, bye bye weekend beach house in the Pacific... :\
