Default TRD SHORT SHIFTER

Is the installation on the TRD Short Shifter...pretty much the same as the RS or the TWM... I just got one from Toyota and want to know if I should have the dealer do it..or if i should save my money and do it. (i installed a Injen Short Ram over the weekend using the YDR instructions i found here..worked like a charm..lil difficulty with the vibramount)..

It should be very easy to replace it. Essentially remove the center console, remove the cable clips, loosen the shift cables, and unbolt the base from the car. Remove shifter and base. Replace with TRD shifter/base and do the reverse of the removal. Check out the Tech section. It is much easier than the B&M shifter I put in. Really don't need the dealer to put it in. If you can put the CAI, you definitely can put the shifter in.

Ah great. I work at a autobody repair shop, so I was able to pick the TRD SS for under a hundred bucks...hopefully it's worth it. Havent seen to many on ebay tho.

The short shifter is simple to install.. If you do not have the center arm rest, I'd suggest having that on hand for installation at the same time.

The only downfall to the SS is the fact that the chrome ring that holds your boot up will not be able to be used on the SS (it's a larger diameter shaft). Most folks end up tucking the shift boot down and leaving it that way..

What I did was auger out the chrome ring to slide over the SS. Invert it and clip it back on the boot upside down. You will need something to hold this ring up once the console is reinstalled. I used a hose clamp and a weak spring on top of that so that there was constant pressure holding the boot up. It looks good and will prohibit anything from falling down inside the boot and into the shifter area.

If you just want to do the simple install.. it still looks fine and it's a quick job. No need to pay someone to do it. I'd say 45 minutes max if you have the tools handy.

i agree.. both ways look fine.. but when you compare the two, the chrome ring just looks finished/factory. Plus, it's just less stuff that I've replaced on the car lying around the barn..lol...

Yeh, I also augered out the chrome ring, then taped some foamed neoprene around the lever to maintain the ring at the proper height- stops the lever from being a noise generating antennae, too... I thought the kit **** and method of dealing with the shift boot was cheesey, to say the least. I stuck with the much more substantial stock ****, too- it has... beef... and just feels better...

The inner clip can be a PITA when you have big old meathooks, but will go back on with some patience and the application of a few obscenities- wish I knew some Japanese obscenities, might have saved some time...
