you can try a heat gun on low to release the glue but be careful if you want to keep the stock fabric in good condition.
When I did my Katzkins install I took a razor blade and cut the foam away. there were some spots that were cut deep, I wasn't paying close attention, but the Katzkins are pretty thick so you don't notice.

"sucks" is a good word to use. just be glad the front seats are no way as bad as the rear seats.

I had my seats done by a custom interrior shop. They ended up glueing the new covers overtop of the old fabric. They decided that any other way there was a good chance that the foam would get tore up and they would have no base for the new fabric. The way mine is done doesn't looks like covers, since they used glue to make the fabric follow the lines of the seats. The front seats are done the old fasion way.

I've seen our interior guys do the leather kits here. All I have noticed that the base of the seats have rods that hold the material to the foam. He normally cuts them off, then uses his metal binding clips to attach the leather kit to them. Otherwise I see him skin them relatively quickly.

i completely ruined the foam on the back seats and had to have an interior shop rebuild them but on the bottom i got smart and just overlayed it. Front seats are easy with about 10 hands

mine are being re-covered as well
i chose a black crushed velvet to replace the centers
the seat outer fabric will stay the same
he is gluing it on but he is also stitching it to the cover
and he said he can rebuild the foam

__update__
we have decided to pull very gently

thanks everyone for your suggestions
i'll post pics when i get the rear seat if ya'll want
