Default Ques bout a car my friend is lookin at buying Subaru SVX

My friend is looking at buying a subaru SVX, it has about 98k miles, the transmission has been replaced by subaru and so has the wheel bearing. We are tlaking to him and he needs to get rid of it soon so he is wiling to negotiate.

Basically wondering if this is a good car to get and If I replace the timing belt and water pump will it give me any more problems. PS I did drive it and it ran fine. its his daily commuter.

I would take it a trusted independent mechanic and get it checked out...but it sounds like a good deal.

get it checked out first, then go from there

The SVX is awesome. Badass but little known competitor to the Japanese GT cars of the nineties like the NA 300ZX and NA Supra. I've heard nothing but great things about those cars. Though I think I read somewhere that the wheel bolt pattern is extremely rare, making it basically impossible to find rims for it.

Regardless, build the motor and turbo it FTW!!! Or swap an STI engine.

The SVX is a great cruiser for almost any kind of on-road weather and like virtually every Subaru some very light off roading. Even though its initially accerlation may not seem great in numbers it picks up immensely beyond 40mph and can one person has reached 175mph, on the Autobahn.

The faults in an SVX are usually the transmission (that usually doesn't start overheating until over 100k miles if not replaced), rear bearings and the brakes which even though others say warp , it really does not as much as the pads becoming uneven as well as worn out. There is also a tiny problem with the chance of the heat shield cover that is near the muffler to become a bit lose causing a little rattle up to 2krpms. But aside from those issues the SVX is pretty much iron clad and can be driven daily beyond 200k miles with good care and the adition of an oil filter. For more info be sure to tell your friend to check out this forum. You can also check out this and this site not to mention one more for all his SVX modding needs if he doesn't know about these websites already.
