I run my air conditioner all the time, ever since I have had my xB. Almost 2 years coming. After my last oil change, I have noticed a weird smell coming from my AC, almost like mildew. Anybody elese have this problem? I took it up to the old reliable guys at Magic Scion, and they blew air through the AC ducts, but that was about it. Nedless to say, I didn't feel like I got much attention or help from these guys again. I am wonder if this problem has come up wih anyone else? My xB has about 25,000 miles now, everything should still be working properly , right?

sometimes the ac drain get backed up and water ends up sitting instead of draining... that causes the mildew smell... sometimes the drian hose gets knocked out of place too... i havent found the exact location but i'm told its behind the glove box

supposedly you can use a water/acohol mix and spray it in the air intake (passenger side wiper cover) and it'll help kill the smell.... or i guess if you like lysol or similar products you can use that too

The airbox is under the dash and is HUGE!!! the drain could be plugged for sure!!

Thanks for the input. How how hard is it to find the spot behind the glove box, should I go under the hood?

I am pretty retarded about cars, that is why I got a new Scion, so i wouldn't have to work on them.

to pull you glove box out... check out the tech section (link in my sig) on the DIY cabin air filter

basicly open glove box.... pinch uper back corners in to release them... then the bottom hinges kinda pop/snap in/out.... that'll open up that area for you...

after that.. i dunno what to look for...lol... sorry

I wish that dealership understood this kind of stuff.

Can I take my Scion to another dealership, and it still be under warranty? Or do I have to take it back to the people that I bought it from?

Any Toyota dealer can do warranty work... the bigger question is if the dealer will do the work under warranty.... we have to submit a claim to get reimbursed for the time/materials... some dealerships are better at that than others.... I will talk to one of the techs tuesday and see if there is something simple you can do or if you should take it in.....

I spoke with one of the techs... he said what you are experiencing is rather common... if you set your heater to "fresh air" (not recirculating) do not have the A/C on, turn the fan on Hi, get some lysol with disinfectant or something comparable (to kill any mold/mildew). spray it into the vents that are at the base of your windshield. Give that a try before doing anything more drastic...

Glad it all worked out!!!! We have one tech that has been here 34 years and a handful over 20 years... seems like they know EVERYTHING about Toyotas... a great resource for sure!

"A buddy of mine who also drives a xb had the same problem when he would turn on his AC for while. The hose that goes from a white box underneath the pass side dash to a hole in the floor was gone, so when it rained water would come through the hole and when the AC was on water would drip on the carpet. We just found a piece of rubber hose that fit and stuck it throught the hole and on to the white box and problem solved. The hole that goes through the floor can be found a little less than a foot away from the center on the passenger side kinda right where your left would be if you were sitting in the passenger side. You will see a cut in the carpet where the hose is supposed to go."

"The hose comes out the case inside the car and goes out a hole in the floor on the firewall just under where the firewall curves under. I couldn't touch mine from the top because of the strut bar. You can feel the hose from inside the car. It's about 6-8 inches right of the hump. You''l have to crawl under the car and shove a piece of wire up inside and move it around to open it up and let the water flow out. You might be able to just squeeze on the hose inside and get it to flow. Or just take it to the dealer and let them put it up on the lift and make sure the drain hole isn't plugged up."
