Default How can I get a Scion in the US back to Canada?

Hi all, I was just wondering if there was anyone out there from Canada who ended up purchasing an xb in the US and bringing it over the boarder to Canada. If so, what were the costs involved in doing so? Was it a difficult process? I REALLY want an xb but I don't want to pay the rediculous mark up that some dealerships are selling it for in up here in Ontario. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance.

Not exactly sure, but this document is probably a good place to start. http://www.riv.ca/english/US_vehicle_admissibility.pdf

i don't see why you can't, shouldn't any hard than just registering and passing inspection. I DO know you can't import a tC because of something with the seatbelts.

Nyd,
I just went through this back in may. extra costs were duty at the border (depends on what you paid for the car), and a couple hundred more for the installation of daytime running lamps and provincial/federal inspections. it was kind of a lengthy process but it was not difficult.

Thanks for the help guys,

I already had the information about the process but I was more looking along the lines of what type of duty (is it a fixed percentage?) you would pay on the car. Also if anyone can recomend a scion dealer in the buffalo/niagara area that has experience with these types of cross boarder sales. Thanks again for any help.

likewise on the dealer... i had no luck contacting all the buffalo area dealers -- although I never did go down there, because I wanted to set up the transaction remotely and just go down once to pay and pick up the vehicle.

I'm in Toronto, lemme know if you want to do a joint trip/deal and if you find a friendly dealer.

Yeah i would definately be interested in that. There surely has to be someone around that area who would consider selling the car to go cross boarder! I am dreading having to pay Canadian prices for this car but I ever since I saw one I can't stop thinking about being in the drivers seat!

Anyways, I hate to beat a dead horse but if anyone out there knows anyone or has themself has purchased an xB in the US and brought it back to Canada please let us know. Thanks.

When you're doing the math on buying new down in the States and bringing it back up, I would seriously consider taking a look at some of the 1-yr old used Scions available...

I just bought my '05 xB in Guelph (Canadian Auto Associates), <20,000 miles, still has factory warranty, and when taking into account the ability to test drive the specific vehicle I was looking at buying, being able to walk away for a couple days to think/negotiate, the extra costs involved in travelling down to the US along with all the extra fees and costs in bringing a car back up and making it legal... I'm sure you get my point.

Good luck with whatever you decide, make sure to let us know how it works out!!

I have been looking into this myself and have a few numbers for you to call. To find out duties and taxes call 1-800-461-9999, for registering the vehicle there is the RIV 1-888-848-8240. I went into my local toyota dealer yesterday and talked to Kris (who is on this forum and owns a white xb that is for sale) He explained to me that it is possible but good luck getting a brand new one, as toyota USA has informed there dealers not to sell one to anyone with a canadian address.
