Hey Chris I just had to have my garage door fixed recently cause mine took a crap and broke. I was shutting my door and one of the brackets broke that the cable went to and it made the door get all cockeyed and I had to take the other cable off to get the door down. Anyway i thought of doing it all myself until I hear you have to be careful about winding the springs....they need to have a certain tension on them. So i had someone come out and fix it. they told me my springs were shot and It ended up costing me $400.00 bucks to have it fixed but they gave me new rollers along with a new bracket and new springs. It was interesting watching him wind the springs. He has two pipes that he was using to wind it. If you do try to do it yourself I'd be very careful but I'd recommend paying someone to do it. I hated to have to shell out the 4 hundy but it was better than me trying and hurting myself or even killing myself with the spring. Sorry that it broke I fell your pain
Be careful. As most of us know, springs are very dangerous. Leaf springs, coil springs, valve springs and garage door springs. If you don't have the right tools and the right know how... I wouldn't reccomend doing it. Just my $.02
Mooneyzs..Thanks for the heads up. Thats exactly why I dont want to do it myself , I want to keep my arms
.
devstc..Does Tim have the pipes or tools to do it? If so, then I would greatly appreciate it. I dont have any funds at the moment to pitch in but maybe we could work somehing out.
Boomster..thats terrible!!!

Chris, if you have the roll spring, you will be able to crank the spring and then “pin” it. Go back and reload the crank, apply pressure, remove the pin and crank more and re pin it. Keep doing this a few times until you feel the load on the door up and down motion is enough that the spring will not have undue pressure and enough load removed not to overload the motor. Free wheeling the door up and door by hand, you will know when the door its to heavy or to light.
