i was wondering when i should get it done...the dealership gave me a sticker on my windshield that says the first service is due at 5000 miles...is this true? it seems like it would be sooner than 3000, like some other people suggested. and does this directly effect my gas mileage?

Yeah, factory service interval is 5000miles for normal driving, it all depends on you man. If you sit idling in traffic for an hour of your 70 minute trip to work then you may want to change it sooner.

i thought the longer your commute, the longer you can wait to change

Sciomodr's example has you not moving for a long time, so while the engine is running, you're not clocking miles. If you go only by the miles, in his example 5000 odo miles might equate to 7000-8000 of actual wear and tear. If your commute is all highway then 5000 is the average (assuming normal weather and normal driver), if you only drive downtown Phoenix in the summer and love to race all the time, revving your engine to 6000rpms at every light, you are under extreme conditions, thus less mileage per interval is appropriate.
