Default breakin in a new engine?

I just go tmy new xB about 2 weeks ago and I already love it, I was just curious about 2 things

1. my gas mileage is going to it looks be around 300 miles on this first tank, with a good mix of city and highway driving with some traffic mixed in there. Is this normal and do these engines seem to get more efficient as they get broken in more? and yes Idrive like an old woman.

2. I was thinking of taking a road trip in a few weeks about 360 miles there and same back, will the new engine be ready and up to the challenge? or is there like a break in period?

thanks for any help, this is my first truly NEW vehicle and Im tryin to learn

I have about 160 miles on my xB. It looks like I will get ~300 miles out of the tank. However, I do not know how much the tank was topped off at the dealer or how linear the gas gauge is.

As far as your trip..... I would go for it. Just don't hit the rev limiter, pull a trailer, etc and you will be fine.

Basically, during the break in period don't drive the xB hard, especially when the engine is cool. Thats about it. Take your trip and have a great time.

You'll be fine if you drive like an old woman. Old habit I have is wait 15 seconds after starting the car before putting it i gear, but with these cars you don't need to. Just do your first oil change around 1k.

Your Scion doesn't require an elaborate breakin procedure, just follow these simple tips for the first few thousand miles. You should not accelerate with full throttle, drive for a long time at a single speed, or significantly vary the engine speed or vehicle speed while driving; race the engine like revving the engine at or near redline while shifting or sitting at a red light; lug the engine in a high gear at very low speeds if you have a 5 speed manual transmission. If possible, avoid hard application of the brakes for the first 200 miles. Follow the supplied maintenance schedule.

1 week after buying my xB I did 11 hours each way to visit the family. No ill effects. I asked my dealer about it and they told me that the engines are already broken in and are ready to go once you get them.

Of course- "hitting the rev limiter" will get you nowhere that much faster and is bad for your engine no matter how many miles you have on it.

This is a question that has been asked many times and everyone has a different idea. I was taught to start the car and drive it away slowly right away--in other words do not let it idle to warm up. Do not go hard until the blue light goes out, and then drive it normally at different speeds. Engines DO NOT need to be broken in like they use to, but why drive crazy at any time???? Good luck with your new car!!!

You should read your user's manual on this subject. however, it pretty much states what Supertech said. Also, as some one previously stated...you are not to let your car warm up in idle, but to drive it to warm it up. Just take it easy until the blue light goes away!

I put 55 miles on it during the test drive, liked what I saw & bought it......

One hour after the dealer delivered the box to the house, wife drove it around the block, I loaded up all the stuff I need for work .

Then 270 miles up I-5 to the truck yard at freeway speeds.{so much for breaking it in easy}
after 6 months of this madhouse commute once or twice a month , the toaster is running like a raped ape....and with the cruise set I am getting a constant 35 mpg...{manual trans}

(If I don't use the cruise I get around 30 'cause it really really likes 75mph!)
