sorry if this has already been asked but i searched and couldn't find it anywhere.

1. i noticed when looking at the c.a.i. on scion's website that it was for offroad use only. does this only apply to certain states or something? i live in NC and know of several people with c.a.i. in their cars.

2. about how much horsepower does it add?

3. is their a better/cheaper one than the one sold buy toyota/scion? if so, how much hp?

 

1. They state that becase its not carb-approved or something like that, but i'm pretty sure you can use it w/o any hassle.

2. Depending on circumstances it may add 5-10hp, but its mostly for sound and looks.

3. Please do not buy the scion/trd one. That one is overpriced and u can find after-market ones for much cheaper. Look at brands such as Injen, AEM, etc...

 

i would look into injen and fujita cai's

 

5-10 hp?? try like none- to like 2hp... u get a nice sound thats about it.

i have the trd intake and i bought mine 250 installed...overpriced??

 

1) As stated, if you live in a state that cares about CARB, then that is there disclaimer to be able to sell a non CARB approved part

2) None that you will ever notice

3) There are lots. The K&N is well known to break brackets (the one built into the motor mount that you cant replace without a new mount) so I would stay away from them.

 

Get the Injen, but my buddy got the Fujita installed today and it sounds fantastic, so I would have to recommend it.

I was just saying that I am getting the Injen, but I saw the Fujita today and it was awesome, It was very nice and had a nice throaty sound. So in summation... (What a great transition, go me) Either is great, I love the Fujita now, but I am gonna get the Injen most likely.

 

I meant to the crank. If it was to the wheels, i'd get one myself.

 

 

well guys, thanks for the info on the c.a.i.'s. is NC one of the states that frowns on them? i always thought CA was the main place to be concerned about stuff like that but i guess it's better safe than sorry.

 

No NC is fine, I have one as well as my buddy and plenty of others, it's fine.

 

yeah i go to pender high now and there's a lot of people with cai but most are just the crappy little primer grey acuras with the el-cheapo bodykits and wing that's bigger than the car. another guy with cai has a newly painted white 1991 Mustang 5.0 with svt rims and stuff, sweet ride. oh well, my tC's better, lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks guys.

 

So I've got a question... If you add extra air with a CAI do you have to change the air/fuel mixture ratio? The car wants to go but I can feel the computer holding it back. Should this be addresed? Im using an HKS exhaust and Injen CAI.

 

and i have have the borla exhaust on my car and noticed that the intake is from borla performance also, would an aftermarket cai be a down grade from that or would it not???

 

No CAI is a downgrade, but Borla is already and aftermarket. AFIK, Injen has the highest dyno'd gains of like 12hp and probably 3-4 whp, but either way, it won't make a big difference, it just sounds cool .

 

I'm not too sure how much you actually "felt* the computer holding it back" as the 2-3 HP that you do gain are barely noticable. You would be surprised at how much of the butt dyno is mental.

 

You dont feel the ECU holding it back.. you simply feel what you feel with any CAI, nothing. Right after install (while the ECU has not caught up) the car dynos a small gain as demonstrated by the manufacturer... what they fail to mention is the lean condition right after install, which is the reason they are seeing the gains they do. In all reality, the gains are so small you will never feel them. I have run the tc with and without one, and can say removing it does nothing but take away the cool sound and bling under the hood. But, there is nothing wrong with sound and look either.

The point of the CAI is to draw cooler air from the fender well (which the stock intake already does, just a little further back). Cool air is more dense. The ECU automatically compensates by adding more fuel (just like the choke did on old carburated engines in cold weather). This is how they are supposed to add power for the most part. In reality the intakes on our cars are very well designed, and you will not notice the gain. But to answer part of your question, no, you dont have to retune. It is still well within the parameters set in the programming.

 

I would go with Injen but thats my choice...
