I know they come tinted, somewhere between 20 and 30% (depending on the panel). And someone else here said that it will crack. But has anyone done it successfully?

View Full Version : Has anyone further tinted their TC sunroof? Dana278 07-31-2004, 03:29 AM I know they come tinted, somewhere between 20 and 30% (depending on the panel). And someone else here said that it will crack. But has anyone done it successfully? That it would crack if you tinted it? That's some BS. tckurt 07-31-2004, 04:35 AM Yea thats Bull cause you can tint over existing tints... it should work good and I think its around 22% b/c thats what I got the rest of my tc tinted at...and it looks like it matches Dana278 07-31-2004, 05:14 AM Ehh I thought it sounded strange. I definitely read it in another post I made regarding tinting. I asked my salesman about tinting it and he said it's not necessary because it's already done. But I remember reading that it's between 20 and 30% already, and I want to get the sides and backs tinted at 10 or 15, so I'd like that all to match. I'll ask the tint shop I made an appointment at what they'd recommend. Nick_AGP 07-31-2004, 05:17 AM I've asked about 10 different tinters that have been doing it for years, and they all said it can cause it to crack. It causes the glass to absorb too much heat and crack. Dana278 07-31-2004, 05:32 AM The glass will crack or the tint? Is it just this specific car? Nick_AGP 07-31-2004, 06:42 AM Glass will, and thats any car with a glass sunroof. Dana278 07-31-2004, 06:48 AM Weird. I've had a few cars with glass sunroofs that were tinted and no one ever said anything about them cracking. Thanks for the heads up, though. nero_tC 07-31-2004, 08:17 AM I've asked about 10 different tinters that have been doing it for years, and they all said it can cause it to crack. It causes the glass to absorb too much heat and crack. huh :?: i never knew the tint actually absorbs heat. other than for privacy, i always thought tinting the windows kept out the sun, so that it would help keep the car a little cooler inside. bofa 07-31-2004, 02:06 PM Someone told me yesterday that if you get mirrored tint (not that bling bling chrome crap), but slightly mirrored, it shouldn't crack. I'm guessing that, instead of absorbing heat, it will reflect it??? Sound about right? itimebomb 07-31-2004, 07:35 PM haven't heard of the cracking thing ever before, but i have been told it's usually harder to add tint to a factory tinted window. they bake the tint into the glass and for whatever reason makes it a little harder to stick. but i'm not for sure Dana278 07-31-2004, 07:43 PM Makes sense. Maybe it's unnecessary for me to even think about. Is the factory tint sufficient at keeping a good amount of sunlight out? Keeping in mind that I live in Arizona.... I guess it's not very popular, since people aren't posting here that they've had it done. zhenya 07-31-2004, 11:14 PM The sunroof on my Millenia was tinted 5% - and I didnt have a problem for more than a year. I tinted both of the sunroofs on the tC 10%. Dana278 07-31-2004, 11:14 PM The sunroof on my Millenia was tinted 5% - and I didnt have a problem for more than a year. I tinted both of the sunroofs on the tC 10%. What happened after a year? yesti 07-24-2005, 03:00 AM talked to the tint shop that did the windows and back windshield on both cars and he said he has tinted many sunroofs and none of the shattered/cracked. he's been doing it for 10+ years. i tinted both sunroofs with 20% silver (mirrored) today and driving home at 3:00pm HST the sun was pouring in as usual but dimmer and NO heat. Before I could feel the heat on my forehead from the sunroof. I'm taking the other car in next week to do the same. zhenya 07-27-2005, 08:03 PM The sunroof on my Millenia was tinted 5% - and I didnt have a problem for more than a year. I tinted both of the sunroofs on the tC 10%. What happened after a year? I got rid of the car after a year  So far its been a little over a year on my tC and no problems w/ sunroof tint yet. apexjr 07-27-2005, 08:12 PM I've asked about 10 different tinters that have been doing it for years, and they all said it can cause it to crack. It causes the glass to absorb too much heat and crack. Well that is a ghetto myth or something! My MR2 has had the T-Tops tinted for 10 years and it's never had any problems. This car came from El Paso before I got it 4 years ago! It ain't going to crack. xnevergiveinx 07-27-2005, 11:39 PM you know what doesn't crack...the sunshade below the sunroof. Dat_Dude 07-28-2005, 05:15 PM That's rediculous!!! Isn't the sunroof glass much like the rest of your windows. Tint doesn't absorb rediculous amounts of heat. It deflects a good portion depending on the material. The thickness of the tint is not enough to retain excessive heat. Also, how do you think glass is made? Besides, in the automotive industry, glass has to be tempered to a degree so when those hot days come it will be fine especially when heat is reinforced in a closed atmosphere. It is true though that adding tint to windows will increase the glass temperature "SLIGHTLY" because of the reflection of the light spectrum frequencies particularly the UV spectrum. What happens when you add tint to glass is that not only is the sunlight UV and other spectrums are being passed through the glass, but the tint is reflecting it back through the glass medium at a lesser intensity which constitutes in the reinforcement of heat retained in the glass medium. But, it is not enough to crack glass. That's absurd! Glass cracking because of tint. That is almost comparable to the revolutionary speed chip sold on ebay that is a resistor put in air temp. sensor. Gives you up to 25 HP! Dat Dude BrEaK_AwaY 07-28-2005, 07:45 PM both of my sunroofs are tinted at 5% over the very light factory tint. they have been like that since i bought the car (january 05) icdedppl 07-29-2005, 02:41 PM both of my sunroofs are tinted at 5% over the very light factory tint. they have been like that since i bought the car (january 05) yeah, but you live in maryland! i'm in florida! i've asked literally half a dozen+ places to tint my sunroof and *some* of them will, but with no warranty because ALL of them (yes, ALL of them) have told me that the sun will start to "bake" the tint on the sunroof (yes, your tint does absorb heat as well) and possibly make it so hot that the sunroof glass could crack/shatter from the heat. it's different from your other windows because it's on top of your car and can have direct heat applied to it. i got my windows tinted from my friend that has been doing tint for almost 10 years now and he would NOT do it because there is too much of a chance that it would damage. he wouldn't even do it and tell me there is no warranty. he said he didn't want to be the one that made my sunroof shatter! and yeah, maybe in other places, it's not that bad because the sun isn't as hotttt there like it is here in florida, but everyone here will either not do it or they told me they will do it but with no warranty because of the chance of it shattering from the heat. BrEaK_AwaY 07-29-2005, 02:58 PM i bought a warranty for all of my tint, including the sunroofs. keep looking for places, somewhere will offer a warranty Stu_Gotti 07-30-2005, 04:03 AM Both roofs tinted.. 40,000+miles.. 1+year.. no problems.. I got 20% tint! wylietc 07-30-2005, 06:13 PM Speaking of tint. Does'nt aftermarket tint fade or turn purple after 3 or 4 years? j_roc 07-30-2005, 10:24 PM Speaking of tint. Does'nt aftermarket tint fade or turn purple after 3 or 4 years? From what I've heard, there two things that turn tint purple. 1.) Cheap autozone/pepboys tint that is just color dyed to be dark. 2.) Using windex (or windex-like products) on tinted windows. Supposedly windex has some kind of chemical in it that turns tint that color. Honestly, I'm not really sure if it's true or not, but I use a Silicone Window Tint Film Cleaner that I got from a tiniting shop just in case and my windows have yet to turn purple. Then again it's only been about 6 months since I've gotten them tinted... Dat_Dude 08-02-2005, 07:13 AM Speaking of tint. Does'nt aftermarket tint fade or turn purple after 3 or 4 years? Make sure you use a lint-free cloth so you can avoid scratching the tint. mofojordan 08-02-2005, 08:10 AM anything with ammonia will damage the tint, this includes the popular simple green cleaner. |
