While I was standing at Hollywood Video the other day, I was thinking of true cult movies that I had rented over and over again during years of VHS/BETA and the introduction of HBO in my small town.

Cheech and Chong- Up in Smoke

Army of Darkness

Rocky Horror Picture Show (the only true cult movie IMO)

Heavy Metal (the movie)

Escape from New York

Animal House

Deliverance (great movie to open a bottle of wine and cuddle with the wife movie)

What are your cult movie selections?

Army of Darkness...please...Evil Dead 2 was cooler and more "cult"...it was so cult it spurred those freaks like me to brave a frozen wonderland of extreme snow & ice to go see the AoD release in the theatres on opening night. But still...Evil Dead 2 was much more cult & better!!!

And may I throw in some others:

Night of the Comet
Labyrinth
Legend
Dragonslayer
Twin Peaks
Highlander
Footloose

Does anyone have a good definition of what a "cult film" is? Your background might give you a head start on that, CA... :)

(I would even slip my top film into the category, but I'm not sure it would be accurate - the '66 Cannes winner, A Man and a Woman (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061138/)).

Ahhh...we probably should define! This is according to Wikipedia (not really a technical "source" but close enough for us):

"Cult film is a colloquial term for a film that has accrued a devoted group of fans. Often, cult movies have failed to achieve fame outside of a small group (however, there are some exceptions.) Sometimes, the group is bound to the film by a shared sense of ridicule for it, rather than artistic merit."

I Married A Weird Person was an animated movie by a guy with a last name of Plympton. I think his first name was George. Anyway, it was one of the most bizarre movies I have ever seen. He did a few others but I have no idea about their titles.

Ran into that in the 1970s at an animation festival at the Harvard Exit Theater up off Broadway in Seattle. Finally got a copy of that when Rhino put it in a VHS tape with a bunch of other really odd little clips and released it. Was pleasantly surprised to find the guy who made it recently put it up on Google video. (I just looked, and there are even DVD releases of it now.) :)
