View Full Version : cult movies

Rocky Horror Picture Show (the only true cult movie IMO)
Heavy Metal (the movie)

mocascion 11-22-2006, 05:18 AM Todd -
Army of Darkness...please...Evil Dead 2 was cooler and more "cult"...it was so cult it spurred those freaks like me to brave a frozen wonderland of extreme snow & ice to go see the AoD release in the theatres on opening night. But still...Evil Dead 2 was much more cult & better!!!
And may I throw in some others:
Night of the Comet
Labyrinth
Legend
Dragonslayer
Twin Peaks
Highlander
Footloose
and for those girls out there: Girls Just Want To Have Fun
mocascion 11-22-2006, 05:38 AM Easy...#1. Donnie Darko.

Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension
Mars Attacks
There are others I'd like to include, but that's a basic list.
(I wonder what a person's choices might reflect of their personalities?)
Tomas
I can't believe no one has mentioned the greatest movie of all time:
The Little Mermaid
Tomas 11-22-2006, 08:41 AM Hmmmmmmm... Somehow The Little Mermaid doesn't strike me as a cult movie. :D
Those I listed above are the top ten of cult movies I have, but are not necessarily THE top ten. :)
Tomas

mocascion 11-22-2006, 05:58 PM Pi is great!!! Darren Aronofsky rocks my world. I remember getting to meet him once at an event and his though process is WONDERFUL! I can't wait to see his new film!

mocascion 11-22-2006, 07:30 PM What about:

And I think that every Kevin Smith film can be added...

Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Clerks II
Clerks the Cartoon
(Okay, I haven't seen Jersey Girl...so maybe that one doesn't count)
Tomas 11-22-2006, 07:49 PM I might add 2001, SpaceBalls and Star Trek/Wars to the list (and the Kevin Smith group), but I'm not sure about the others being 'cult'...
Does anyone have a good definition of what a "cult film" is? Your background might give you a head start on that, CA... :)
(I would even slip my top film into the category, but I'm not sure it would be accurate - the '66 Cannes winner, A Man and a Woman (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061138/)).
Tomas

Monty Python and the Meaning of Life...
C'mon...
"every sperm is special, every sperm is great, if a sperm gets wasted, God gets quite irate"
Oh, and Brazil is awesome! I liked Baron Munchausen too.
In my high school days, our big "cult movie" was "The Hollywood Shuffle" with Robert Townsend. We would watch it in big groups, and quote it forever. It is a spoof on "blaxsploitation" films...
dugzilla 11-22-2006, 11:46 PM I believe it is: every sperm is sacred. I love monty python!
singleshot 11-23-2006, 12:08 AM remembered another one...
Corvette Summer
MNScion 11-23-2006, 12:09 AM Considering it is about the Catholic Church, you are probably right!! I also love the part with "the machine that goes PING"!! And the live organ donations...

DirtyMexican 11-23-2006, 01:25 AM OK I need some help with this one, does anyone here renember a movie from the mid 80's, it was kinda like a fast and furious of that time, called "The Wrath" maybe it was "the Wraith"? it had some guy that would race these dudes in a Black Sports car and he would race them and then kill them?

nwscionman 11-23-2006, 02:10 AM Considering it is about the Catholic Church, you are probably right!! I also love the part with "the machine that goes PING"!! And the live organ donations...

mocascion 11-23-2006, 03:25 AM I might add 2001, SpaceBalls and Star Trek/Wars to the list (and the Kevin Smith group), but I'm not sure about the others being 'cult'...

Tomas
Ahhh...we probably should define! This is according to Wikipedia (not really a technical "source" but close enough for us):
"Cult film is a colloquial term for a film that has accrued a devoted group of fans. Often, cult movies have failed to achieve fame outside of a small group (however, there are some exceptions.) Sometimes, the group is bound to the film by a shared sense of ridicule for it, rather than artistic merit."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_film
They have a list of cult films there...I totally forgot the David Lynch classics!!!
captainlaziness 11-23-2006, 03:28 AM Ok, if you're gonna add Corvette Summer, how about The Guyver?
You know, the super cheesy action movie from the early 90's.....kung-fu fighting with monsters....based on a Japanese manga of the same name....no?
Well, Mark Hamill was in that one too.
I think that having Mark Hamill in the cast automatically gives a movie 'cult' status. :D
DirtyMexican 11-23-2006, 03:38 AM how about the entire TROMA series, gotta give the Toxic Avenger some love to
DirtyMexican 11-23-2006, 03:43 AM how about the entire TROMA series, gotta give the Toxic Avenger some love to!

kkawana 11-23-2006, 01:46 PM OK I need some help with this one, does anyone here renember a movie from the mid 80's, it was kinda like a fast and furious of that time, called "The Wrath" maybe it was "the Wraith"? it had some guy that would race these dudes in a Black Sports car and he would race them and then kill them?

Mansquito!
Wyatt_Herb 11-24-2006, 04:23 AM Did you mean Mike Meyer's "So I Married an Axe Murderer"
I Married A Weird Person was an animated movie by a guy with a last name of Plympton. I think his first name was George. Anyway, it was one of the most bizarre movies I have ever seen. He did a few others but I have no idea about their titles.
What about Walkabout? Do any of the old-school Arnold movies count? Red Sonja? The Running Man?
On that note, Beastmaster!
Did someone mention Natural Born Killers? Reservior Dogs?
nwscionman 11-24-2006, 04:25 AM maximum overdrive was awesome... wasn't that done to an AC/DC album? How about Mad Max?? (Particularly the first one) ans another obscure 70's movie called "Swarm"

Didn't see that coming! Whew.
How'd you come across that?
Tomas 11-24-2006, 05:39 AM Ran into that in the 1970s at an animation festival at the Harvard Exit Theater up off Broadway in Seattle. Finally got a copy of that when Rhino put it in a VHS tape with a bunch of other really odd little clips and released it. Was pleasantly surprised to find the guy who made it recently put it up on Google video. (I just looked, and there are even DVD releases of it now.) :)
Seeing it for the first time on the 'big screen' in a theater was amazing - we kept calling for them to run it again. :D
Tomas
PizzaBox 11-24-2006, 06:19 AM The Gods Must Be Crazy.
