Default Handling in winter weather

I'm sure most of you heard about the storms in St. Louis considering it was being made out to be OMGWTFBBQSTORMOFDEATH2006.

I hate the first snow in a new car. In this case, it was more ice than snow, and when I left work 3 hours early the roads were covered in it, and it was coming down something terrible. I have two nasty hills to contend with getting into my subdivision, and my last car couldn't get up them more than it could.

I was beyond impressed with Humpty's (what I actually ended up naming my car) performance. The ONLY time I slid was coming up the steepest part of one of the hills, and I did not slide out of control, just slipped a little bit. I never would have even tried going home in my last car as bad as it was here yesterday.

I didn't go to work today because going *down* those hills is quite a bit trickier - if you miss and slide you're going to end up in a lake or wrapped around a tree.

Curious as to how others feel about their Scions in the winter weather?

well, in so cal we don't get winters as bad as yours i'm sure. but i would suggest getting better tires. my stock treads had a really bad time with gripping the road when it was raining. then again, it could also be because at the time my tires were over inflated which meant less surface area to grip the road. just make sure you watch the pressure in your tires and don't stomp on your gas or brake pedal. these cars are really light, and i'm assuming that adds to the "i don't want to stay on the ground" feeling from your tires.

I've driven all 3 models in up to 10" of fresh powder both with stock tires and with 18" Nitto Neo Gens. I didnt get any of them stuck and was impressed with their overall performance. When it snows here this year I wont be taking my xB though. At that point its time to pull the focus outta the garage and beat the hell out of it...

My xa did amirably well with stock tires in the snow storm last year. i can't say the same for my mazda3 hatchback. i promptly traded it in for the xa a few days later and have no regrets since.

In the thread about "winter in effect" I noted that I was very impressed with my car's handling in this stuff. I'm in the KC area and we have the ice and snow. I was going to get snow tires, but now, I don't know. I think I can get wherever I need to with the stocks.

Very impressed, indeed.

The midwest just got hit with a really big snowstorm, all the way down to Texas supposedly. Any good snow driving reports? Chicago?

Where I am we only got about 5" of snow. I only drove around town yesterday, but it was no problem at all. Better handling then I would have guessed. I'm looking forward to more to see what my xA can do with it.

My xA did great in the snow. Even when purposefully trying to loose control, it was still a very manageable car to drive. It recovers easily and brakes well (as it is so light). Then again FWD cars are always a blast in the snow (try driving a Lexus LS400. . . )

Watch out for deep snow and losing the aero black plastic things under the front bumper.

You gotta love the look of the snow / slush / ice beards behind the front fenders on our little door stops!

I put the mud flaps on mine, and knowing how flimsily those are attached, I'll be surprised if I still have both of them for very long.
