Default Has This happend to you Air Bags?.. Not A Repost !-UPDATE

Ok so a few months ago I'm driving down the highway on my way from my gf's house. doing about 35-45. I see something on the road but couldn't really avoid it. Bang I got over it. My driver side curtain, goes off, My tire gets sliced and my wheel gets bent..

Now the wheel getting bent and the tire getting sliced i'm not to worried about.. I understood why that happened.

Now the air bag, going off.. I didn't understand.. then like a month later I see toyota has a recall on the side curtain airbags sensors. So I get my post card from my local Toyota dealer to go in my car is in the recall to have the sensors and wind deflectors changed..

I called an made my appointment. I get there they check their system my car isn't in there.. So I tell them what happened with my side airbag. They tell me that they can't touch the car till i call toyota an let them now what happened,

So i did that an i been going back an forth with them on the phone telling them what happened.. So right now i'm just waitting on a call back to see what they will do to help me out on this...

I must say the people handling my case are super nice...

Well he did survive didnt he? Im not trying to be mean but sometimes airbag in general dont go off unless the cimputer registers it as a serious accident.

I guess you missed the recall on the Airbag sensors to be replaced! It was post on this site! See here: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=145533

As far as them not going off, that is the biggest misconception ever. If you wrecked and they did not go off, they most likely shouldnt have. If they go off when they are not supposed to, you can be seriously injured. There are very specific circumstances in which they are supposed to go off. But most people, not being old enough to remember when airbags first came out, were going off easilly and killing some people, seem to think they should go off in any accident, which is totally untrue.

As for this case, it is most likely the same issue from the recall item, which caused them to go off when they should not due to being jarred around. But if you did not go in to the dealer when it first happened, then you most likely are going to have a harder time getting service now. When a warranty item appears, take it to the dealer for sure.

i took them in the day after it happened... The serivce manager kept walking around looking to see if i had any damange around the doors. I didn't an since i rolls the air bag up an tucked it under the piller.. they didn't belive me that it deployed.. The thought my light going off was a ecu malfunction an wanted to check for codes. the a few weeks after that my DL expired so i couldn't drive my had it parked infront of my house .. an that an work .. i couldn't find the time to take it back in to get it checked.. I let the people at scion know this. ..

My moms knows all this also.. she let me know if they don't cover the repair that she will let her lawer handle this.. But Monday i'm going to give them a call back..

From what i know about cars and air bag systems.. there is know reason that air bag should have gone off..

You are correct there. It takes a side impact, and the right amount of acceleration in the horizontal direction to set them off. So definitely keep pushing them and dont let them screw you around on it.

Yeah, the people @ Scion are really customer friendly. Just like when the dealer installed our tC's alarm they scratched the dashboard and we had to get it replaced 3 times since they still couldn't get it right. And to this day, they still havent got it right. just glad u weren't injured!!

they haven't replaced them because they don't want to cover it under warranty or the recall

It sounds like they are trying to avoid covering your deployed airbags. The 60-H recall is remedied: "DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TWO SIDE IMPACT AIRBAG SENSORS AND INSTALL A URETHANE PAD IN THE FRONT DOORS".

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...rintVersion=NO

To reset and put new airbags in it will cost toyota well over $1000, and they dont want to drop that kind of cash if they can slither thier way out of it... as the recall states that Airbags can inadvertantly deploy when the doors are closed with excessive force. To be perfectly honest, they are probably only putting the urethane pad in, and replacing the sensors with the same OE parts.
It isnt until a bunch of peploe die in firey crashes that a big company will actually start spending money. Think Fight Club... or in real life, think Firestone.[/url]

glad to hear it. If not, you would have perfect grounds to sue them and force the issue. It is cut and dry:

Was there a side impact of the type needed to deploy an airbag? Obviously no in this case

Did the airbag deploy? Yes, obviously.

Case closed. Defective and under warranty. Even if the car were out of warranty you could probably win that one.

Luckilly though, they replaced them for you and you didnt have to go through that
