Default Air comes out vent even when AC/fan is turned off...?

I've noticed this more and more since I got my TC. At virtually any speeds, but most noticable above 35+mph, air will come out the vents even when I turn the ventilation system off. It's quite annoying, when the temperature is just perfect inside the car, to have to turn the climate **** to make this air cooler or warmer when all I want is NO AIR to come through the vents. Its strong enough at higher speeds that even with the vents closed, I can still feel air leaking out from behind the slats.

Now, I drove my stepmom's avalon this weekend and even at high speeds, if the system is off, NO air comes through the vents. I feel like I'm driving a cheapass domestic.

Is this normal? Am I an exception?

There s a lever/switch that switches between recirculating air inside the cabin and using fresh air from outside.
Yours is set to outside air.
it wouldn't hurt to read the owners manual.

So you are saying to prevent this, when I want to have no air come in, to push the recirculating button and it won't do this?

Kind of a pain in the ___, but if that will work....I'll do it! Can anyone else confirm until I drive my car later on today?

"it wouldn't hurt to read the owners manual."

Thanks, I have. Sure didn't see anything about air coming in when I have the ventilation system turned off. No other cars I've owned have done this. Including other toyotas....

I'm on my third toyota and every single one of them has an "outside air" lever or button. When outside air is selected and the fan is off you can feel the difference in the amount of air comming through the vents as you go faster.

recirculate button light on = shut off outside air

it's just a normal thing. you can leave your recirculate light always on. for me I always like outside air coming and save some electricity when driving.

It's really not a pain in the ___ if your not lazy...it should be about a foot and a half from your right hand.............just giving you a hard time...

I think the recirculate button is a nice feature...if it is turned on then you get no air flow, if it is not then you get fresh air, which is a good alternative (in some cases) to using the HVAC which will improve the fuel economy...

No, it's not that much effort. I just prefer using the fresh air because it's hot around here right now, and the fresh air cools the car faster. Plus, it's quieter that using the recirculated air. And...it's fresher air.

I'll test it out when I goto work. Hopefully this solves it...and if it does, thank you!

Take no offense to this at all, but I'm laughing reading this post. Just can't believe some people don't know you can have outside air coming through your vents.

Coming from cars that don't allow outside air to come in without the ventilation system turned on, I don't particularly see the post as stupid or funny. I obviously know it's outside air coming in! But whatever!

Yes, every car I've ever owned would let air in if the vents were open, fan was off, and controls were set to "fresh" or "not recirculate". It's posts like this that make me want to run screaming away from the board. "Why are there rust spots on my rotors?" "Why does my engine make more noise the faster I go?" "Why is my shifter/clutch/brake/steering to soft/hard/loose/tight?" "Why does the car jerk when I shift?" (I would mention "Why is my cruise control upside-down?" but that was too funny to make me mad.)

What I want to know is "Why aren't you driving some POS like I did when I was 16?"

And lucky, what car are you used to driving that doesn't let air in? I want to find one since they must be magic or something.

And since I'm venting, I hate cybergypsy. She's a waste of oxygen. There, I'm done, I'll be nice from now on.

Plus I'm curious as to what kind of car makes the car cooler with fresh air...it's kind of common sense. Recirculate uses the same air (which is already cold), so unless the outside air is cooler, there's no way fresh air would cool the car off better. If the outside air is cooler, then what are you doin with the air on? Open the windows, it'll work better

I'm confused...do you want air coming in or not? you seem to be complaining that it's coming in, yet choosing to set the controls so that it does come in.

having said that...I think everyone here needs to lighten up just a bit. the scion tC is a brand new car, and if you're a first time new car owner (as I will be if my FREAKIN' CAR EVER GETS HERE!!! STUPID PUNK DEALER!!!!! sorry, been waiting for 3 weeks, I'm a little frustrated ) then you're going to have some questions. I'm sure that many of my questions will be stupid questions, but if you can't come here and ask stupid questions, then where should one go for help?

please be gentle with me when it's my turn.

very true, and if you said its not your wrong. I noticed this before, but now I have no AC controls and the only way I can get alittle air on rainy days is to set it to outside air. recirculating cuts it off

tell your scion reps that they're not doing a proper delivery if you don't know about the open and closed vent button on your tC.

I was waiting for you to do it... If you didn't, then I would've blown up with the same rant Us, somewhat older people, should probably try to take it easier, just ignore this kind of stuff. It's kinda hard to ignore 99% of posts, though. We can start a movement for making (at least the tC part of the forum) more mature, but it's all just wishful thinking.
