Default Belt tensioner pulley bolt question

The water pump on my daughters '06 tC went out and I replaced it today along with the belt tensioner pulley (with help from this forum). As warned, the bolt holding the belt tension pulley was a huge PIA. when I re-installed it, I used a slightly shorter bolt to avoid the clearance issue. Now I'm wondering if there was a reason that longer bolt may have been necessary. Is it possible that it enters the water jacket and needs to be that length keep the coolant out of the block?
