i have the Nyko Intercooler "EX" version and damn it does a great job. yeah its $20 and u pay for what u get but i touch my xbox after couple hours of game play and its pretty chill. not warm or hot at all. i recommend it. yeah people say it sucks. because they know the first intercooler release but with the new EX version its much better. and pls dont get a laptop intercooler, its a waste of a plug and its not specifically design for the 360.

I used to test these things for a living. I've also owned 2 so far.
If you are concerned about the lifetime of the console, then the intercooler won't help you out. If a console is going to get the 3-red-lights-of doom error, then it's going to happen anyway - this has to do with a bad solder job on the CPU, and not with overheating.
If your console shuts down constantly due to overheating, then you do need an intercooler. I agree that the Nyko one is hokey. What you want is one that is USB-powered so it shuts off with the console. If possible, get one with a built-in hub, so you can hide all the peripheral connections behind the console (and/or plug in 4 wired controllers).
Are there any coolers that you can lay your Box horizontally on that are actually for the 360? I dont like my systems to be vertical and if so does it have its own power source?
Just a little thread necromancy here... I have the Halo 3 edition 360, it's green and orange. I keep mine vertical, and the closest object to it is like 2 feet away. I've played for as long as 12 straight hours (yay surgery!), and it was always just warm to the touch. My cousin has the same system and he keeps his horizontal due to space and has major heat issues. The Nyko intercooler did not help him at all. Setting it vertical and moving it away from the TV/wall did.
yeah it really depends on peoples setups. mine is horizontal and has some air room behind, side and in front of it since the tv is on top. but no issues so far. i did get the red ring but thats because i got my box close to first release. im sure microsoft fixed it a bit.

The intercooler DOES NOT prevent ring of death. I know first hand. It can help with overheating issues, but thats about it. If you get a newer console, you probably don't need one if you use some common sense.
I had it on it for a long time. It makes so much extra noise and it wasn't making a difference so I pulled it off and have been much happier since. Mine lays horizontal.

btw if you call microsoft for any reason, dont tell them you have an intercooler on it, because then they will void your warranty. Happened to my brother....and you will get the RROD...its almost a certainty.
