I am planning on getting an indash navi but I'm not sure what to get. Does anyone have the pioneer f series or the kenwood dnx5120? Whats good and bad about them?
Yes I did look around the forum to see what others have posted but I am still stuck between the two...........
The Pioneer is a great unit. The current firmware resolved the bulk of the issues that plagued the first round of buyers. I haven't touched the current Kenwood system yet, but I've had a bad experience with their 07-08 models. I saw a 40% fail rate... usually the screen motor will die after a year or so of usage.
I really like the pioneer but I keep seeing a lot of bad things about it. Did the firmware resolve the bootup time for the pioneer? Is their any other problems with the Pioneer after you updated the firmware?

The only issue I've been hearing about after the latest firmware is an occassional boot-up hang. Aside from that, it's good. It comes down to what will actually bother you and what you're psyching yourself out over due to forums. It does have its short-comings, but everyone I've heard feedback from (personal friends) still like it.
If you want to wait a month or two, the new Eclipse is coming. The AVN726E is rumored to be at a $1400 MSRP (Decent for an Eclipse). It'll feature a similar function set to the F90BT, but not too many details have been revealed. I'm waiting to get this unit in my 4Runner. I have the Avic-Z3 in my xD. Everyone talked smack about it, but I haven't found a single problem with it.
My avic-f90bt just crapped out. Its locked up, and the only thing it does is boot up and turn off. It has the 2.0 update on it, and is only 1 week old.... Its nice lookin but DONT BUY
I have the DNX5120 and love it! I chose Kenwood over all other companies because Garmin is the best navigation out there as far as dependability and interface goes. I'm really happy with my decision though because in addition to the great navigation, the iPod interface is very intuitive and the video quality is very good as well.
i have my dnx5120 for over a year now, they just released a dnx5140, only difference is it can speak the actual street names. so far really good, i installed a pac-swi jack to sustain steering wheel control also. im not too hot for the ipod control as i prefer my hd radio. the navigation is CAKE! get the remote too, if you play a lot of dvd's. its only 30 bucks on ebay...pricey. other than that...get it from crutchfield, i belive its under 600 right now...u get product support and warranty. dony buy gray or black market for this unit.
ricennoodle you really think its worth it to have that remote?
Everytime I place an order on crutchfield I debate dropping the extra $20 to get the remote shipped with the same order just to have it, but I really dont see any realistic scenario where I'd use it. Do you use yours??
Oh I also have the pac-swi jack and it works great except it wouldnt let me program the MODE button, it doesnt recognize when I press it... do you have this issue?
the remote, its fancy lol. i dont use it much, but my backseat passengers love it.
for the pac swi jack, i had the same problem. i went to circuit city (now closed) to get that problem fixed, when i press mode, i can switch from nav to tuner to dvd no problem...it has to go through all the functions like xm bluetooth etc when trying to switch to another function. that was my only gripe about the pac swi jack, i'll see if i can try to contact the guy who installed it for me....but since he got layed off...u try crutchfield tech support?
If you like modding equipment get the F90BT... as far as I know the 8120 and presumably the Eclipse unit are use what you get, which is ok 'cause they're good units, but if you like editing things at the code level (meaning new images, settings, etc. not done through the unit standard) get the Pioneer, head on over to avic411.com, and start modding!

Does anyone know if the current stock iPod cable (for our stock pioneer systems) will plug into any/all new pioneer headunits? I would assume so, but sometimes manufacturers like to get tricky...
