I used red stained glass look spray paint from the local crafts store. I only put on two coats and it was dry in about 35min. The can of paint cost $6 and could probably do about 10 -15 sets of lights.

The outside. I masked everything off first, ofcourse. The paint is designed to dry with a high gloss, so no clear was needed.
