In 2011, BMW and Toyota began collaborating on a new series of lithium-ion batteries. The arrangement was such that BMW would benefit from Toyota’s battery know-how, and Toyota would benefit from BMW’s diesel know-how. Since then, the collaboration has gone from green to sporty.

Now the German and Japanese allies are setting their sights on a new rear-wheel-drive sports car platform for the next-generation BMW Z4, 6 Series and the Toyota 86/GT86/Scion FR-S. Beyond those next-gen cars, the platform could be used for a new Toyota Supra.

BMW and Toyota are focusing on light weight and agility for this front-mid-engine platform. Car Magazine is reporting the chassis will also use some carbon fiber bits to sweeten the driving experience.

BMW is serious about melting away the pounds for its next-gen 6 Series in order to compete more with the Porsche 911. To imagine the FR-S on a shared chassis with a 911 competitor sounds to us like the next FR-S will be the value proposition of the century.
