There are 1,225 Toyota dealers in the United States, 1,000 of which sell Scions. The majority of Toyota dealers sell the Scion brand because of the xB’s and tC’s initial successes.

Fast forward to 2013 and Toyota is telling its dealers they can walk away from their Scion franchises without suffering penalties. Scion sales have precipitously declined since their 2006 peak, and many blame this on the brand’s aging product lineup.

Toyota is offering some perks to dealers that do elect to stay with Scion. Carrot number one: a Scion FR-S convertible, which was displayed at Toyota’s national dealer meeting in Atlanta recently. A California Toyota dealer told Automotive News a subcompact crossover (carrot number two) was previewed at the Atlanta gathering. WorldCarFans reports the subcompact crossover would compete with the production version of Honda’s Urban SUV concept.

Will Toyota be able to meet FR-S convertible production demands? Will a subcompact crossover bring life back to the rest of the Scion brand? Let us know your predictions in the comments.
