Toyota 86 vs. Honda S2000 Around Buttonwillow Raceway Park: Place Your Bets
The age-old battle rages on: Which side do you favor, Honda or Toyota?
The 86 occupies an interesting space in the enthusiast world. With it’s front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, relatively low cost, and low power, it stands apart from many modern cars. In fact, the only new cars that really compete against it are the Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth, and the Mazda Miata. But what if you’re a fan of a different, albeit similarly priced sports car, like the Honda S2000? Well then, this video may be useful for you.
Although the S2000 is no longer in production, it’s analog driving experience, savage engine and general reliability means that the cars have stood the test of time. This is especially true in regards to values and prices. 15 year old S2000s are trading hands for the same money as new Toyota 86s, which is wild.

So, if you’re a discerning track day enthusiast, seeing how the two stack up, with two evenly matched drivers, would be very helpful. Fortunately, that is exactly what this video is about. A modified AP1 S2000 squares off against a modified Subaru BRZ around Buttonwillow Raceway Park.
Interestingly, despite the power disadvantage on paper, 240 in the S2000 vs. 200 in the 86, the BRZ manages to overpower the S2000 in the straights. The owner puts this up to his performance modifications, which includes a full header and exhaust setup, along with an engine tune. It’s impressive to see an 86 keep up with, and ultimately overtake one of the best sports cars of the modern era. One has to wonder how much further the 86 platform can be developed in terms of speed and pace.
