i hate the front end of the car. it makes me want to throw up. the rear is sweet. and the car is sweet. lets hope their (vw's) electrical gremlins are long dead and gone.
I'll start by saying that I love the new GTI. But if it's really coming out to $27K or so there are plenty of better options out there. If you can't get it down below $25K out the door, I'd be looking into a 350Z, WRX/9-2X Aero, base Evo, Legacy GT, Civic Si, RX-8, Mustang GT, etc.
All of those cars could be had for around the same price or less, and all of them are about as fast or faster than the GTI. They are all very nice cars inside (except maybe the Evo and Mustang), and they are all good platforms for modding.
350Z- Base models are said to be the fastest in a straight line, though they don't come with a whole lot in the way of goodies. Still to keep the price realistic here, we can't go for much more. Very quick car, good handling, great grand tourer. Said to still have issues chewing up tires.
WRX/9-2x Aero- AWD, turbo, and available loaded under $25K from most dealerships. Good handling, very quick, and responds extremely well to mods. The transmission in the only relatively weak point. It is not troublesome at all for normal spirited driving, but it wasn't designed to be launched on. 4,000rpm clutch dumps are a no-no. The 9-2x Aero is a rebadged WRX sold through Saab dealerships. Saab is owned by GM, and thus I understand you can get one even cheaper than a WRX. I actually heard of them going for under $20K in 2005, don't know if it's true or not.
Evo RS- This is a stretch since Evo's are MSRPing at 29K now. I don't know if dealers cut good prices on these cars or not. But again, the base model is said to be the fastest in a straight line. The tuning potential for this car is virtually unlimited. The interior isn't that great and reliability issues mostly related to driver abuse. Relatively easy to push 400hp, and with a good aftermarket suspension, nigh unbeatable in the corners. The bang for buck car to have.
Legacy GT- Sleeper car of the year. They won't see this car coming. WRX-like performance in a nice cushy family sedan. Road and Track posted a quarter mile time of 13.7 stock. Responds really well to mods. Can probably be had from a dealer for $25K-$27K.
Civic Si- What hasn't already been said about this car. It's FWD like the GTI, and has similar performance. The GTI has just barely eeked by the Si in comparisons, but I'd rather pay like $20K-22K for an Si than $27K for a GTI. Responds ridiculously well to mods for an NA car. Other K20 engine platforms have been known to reach upwards of 250hp with bolt-on NA modifications.
RX-8- Universally dogged for reliability and gas/oil consumption. This car is not as fast as many of the other listed here, but it sure feels like it. Properly maintained, this car will last forever, despite the naysayers arguments to the contrary. The real advantages are in the design. It seats four comfortably, is often insured as a sedan instead of a sports car, has easily the nicest interior of any car listed here, and has absurdly good handling. Does not respond well to power mods. With a good suspension setup, nothing that doesn't say Evo, Lotus, Porsche, S2000/NSX, or RX-7 on the back stands a chance of beating it on a twisty course.
Mustang GT- Yeah, it's played out. But if straightline acceleration is your thing, short of an Evo, it won't get much better than this.
