LOS ANGELES — The Maybach California Gourmet Tourer, equipped with an espresso machine and a wine rack, is just one of the offbeat entries in the Los Angeles auto show's automotive design competition this year.
Auto designers riffed on this year's theme, "An L.A. Adventure," and created a wide range of products from the GMC Pad, a "rolling urban loft," to the Audi Nero, a modern interpretation of the Auto Union racers of the 1930s. Other entries include the Scion Exile, which takes its inspiration from an exotic midengined sports car; the Hyundai Greenspeed Gator, which harks back to the Top Fuel racers of the 1960s; and the amphibious Smart Rescue Vehicle.
Many of L.A.'s 14 automobile design studios, including Honda Research and Development, General Motors West Coast Advanced Design Studio, and Hyundai Kia America Design Center, are participating in the competition.
The winning entry will be based on how well the design interprets the theme, its appropriateness to Southern California, and its unique design characteristics, show organizers said.
The winner will be named on January 5 at the Design Los Angeles conference, a forum for auto designers.
What this means to you: The competition proves once again just how inspirational L.A. can be when it comes to auto design.
