Default From Scion to Subie *UPDATED*

Ok, not literally but think I'm going to sell my tC and get a 2010 Subaru WRX STi. I work at a Scion dealer and our Scion manager wants to get an EVO X. I told him to consider the STi because they are more reliable. I did a bunch of research on it and I fell in love. I've driven my supercharged tC for 5 years and 60,000 miles and $13,000 in mods later, I still love it but its time for me to move on. I am married now and I think a 5-door hatch + AWD = much more practical for the future. What do you all think about the STI?

*UPDATE*

From what I've read it's a good car. Even a WRX would probably be a step up from the tC in a lot of ways - the STi is on a whole other level. And a 5door certainly would be a bit more practical in your situation.

Stay out of this thread if you do not have anything valuable to contribute. Do you realize the IS-F is twice the price of the STI? And the IS350 has the same engine as a V6 Camry (which my wife drives). I am looking for AWD.

btw - You have the grammar skills of a 5th grader. Clearly you are not smarter than one.

I am looking at a 2010 GTI as well as the WRX 5-door. I do love the look of the WRX and STI. They are both awesome rides I would love to have them. I just want somethign with 4 doors, fun to drive, nice interior with supportive seats and reliable. The AWD is nice but not necessary for me. I can drive a tC fine in the snow and i here the GTI handles well in the snow from VWvortex. Juts throwing my perspective as I am looking as well and looking at a vehicle your interested in as well.

If you get it... definitely throw some pics up here for us.
Honestly if it were in my budget... I'd have a WRX STi 5-door as well. Very nice car that is pretty zoomy straight from the factory. And certainly being AWD would be a good choice for the neck of the woods I live in out here in snowy CO.

Only thing I've heard about the WRX's in general... and like I say, have only "heard". Is that they have been known to have a few reliability issues and with the smaller size of the engine bay...makes the boxer design more of a pain to work on/ maintain. Even if that is true... I'd still take one if I could

Only bad thing I've heard is their transmissions... but I don't know if that is a problem with this current generation.

The thing thats pushing me away from the wrx though is the GTI has a 6spd and gets around alot better gas mileage and even with a stage 1 tune people are reporting high 20's and low 30's fro gas mileage. Thats impressive. Thats better than i get with the tC!

well only thing I'd be cautious of is that VW has not been having anywhere near stellar performance/reliability lately. I love the styling...but for some reason the quality lately hasn't been their usual kick a** reputation they had built up.
I'm saying that as an honest statement. Even against my own country....

Its funny how people bash Volkswagen on this forum on their relieablity when Toyota is going down in quality and gotta worry about your Toyota brakes and steering failing on you and killing you right? Such a good company to look after their loyal customers when they knew all about the issues.. I dont see those problems in a VW!

I have a Mk5 GTI with a bunch of bolts on its got 60k on it and hasn't given me an issues ever...You guys have no idea how relieable the mk5 and mk6 platform is. I'm doing 290whp and 320ftlbs tq on stock k03 turbo thats STI numbers just on bolt on!

Volkswagen will so take toyotas place in worlds #1 in the coming years you will see.

Ohh and how much is a brake job and Insurance and mods on a STI?? hmmm might wanna look into it

What does the price of a brake job have to do with anything?

Hey VW quality has gone way up. The MKIV is where alot of problems were. The MKV's is where VW reliability started going way up. But when the car I will be getting is Automobile mag's car of the year and Canadian car of the year speaks volumes to me. Plus all the great reviews from edmunds and Car and driver to name a few I am very likely to get it.

But there is still a lil bit of love for the WRX. I cant afford an STI unless there is a heck of a deal on a used one. But i am very hesitant on pickign up a used STI.

Have you thought about getting just the base model WRX? It's $10,000 more for the STi for 40 horsepower, LSD and a badge saying STi. Not saying it's a bad car, just saying it's not worth the premium.

you also get a 6th gear, Brembos, DCCD, 18" wheels, and a widebody

well worth the $7K premium IMO

I like the new body style alot. You can get a new 2010 STI for under $35K. I am not planning to get the BBS/NAV package ($3800)

I've heard people say the DCCD is more of a novelty than something that's actually useful. The gearing in the STi is shorter than the WRX in certain gears (don't remember which ones but the WRX technically has a faster 0-60 because you don't need to go into 3rd gear where as in the STi you do..something like that..)

The brembos are really just factory brakes made by brembo..by no means a true BBK so braking performance isn't going to be a hell of a lot different or noticeable.

OP - not saying you shouldn't go with the sti..it's a sweet ride! just pointing out some of my own personal observations of things I would consider in my purchase. For me the deciding factor is the widebody..I love it!
