Warning! Warning! Warning! The new Rabbit has arrived!
This is the vehicle that will blow away the Scion, Yaris, Versa, Fit, you name it in the <$16K Derby.
I drove a two-door Rabbit with TipTronic Satuday and was blown away. This is NOT a chintzy automobile for the money. The dash has a pure quaility looks and feel. It's not a kiddie car but reeks of sophistication. The handling is tight and well-damped. The 2.5 liter 5 cyclinder will scream. The TipTronic really works well with up and down shifts, plus it has auto sports mode that will shift at higher points depending on how deep your foot is in it. Opening the hatch was a flashback to my '78 Rabbit. It was a hurge cave, plus the back seats fold flat to provide enough room for a bachelor to move his stuff in two trips. 8^)
The down side is the mileage: 22/30 for either manual or auto. Not in the fuel miser category but for what you get in value the mpg is easy to give up.
The two-door is $15K with 5-speed. The ONLY option I would need is the $400 wheel package that ups to 16 inch alloy wheels from 15 inch hubcaps (which don't look bad). Power everything, stereo, AND cruise control are standard.
BIG DEAL: right now they are coming from Germany. No Mexican or South American parts or labor! This car should smash the Beetle (which wouldn't be hard to do).
I'm seriously considering putting the xB in the paper because they actually have 4.8% rates for 60 months in July.
This is the car that is planned to put VW back on the map for young buyers. I ain't young and I'm pretty excited about the total package.

With gas prices growing as fast as they are, those extra 10mpg will be more important than the extra power of the Rabbit IMO. If that power meens your paying an extra $20 at the pump every week people will think twice before buying a 22MPG small car. Now when they bring the diesals over, that'll be a different story...
Guys, you can't compare the Rabbit to the Fit. The Fit is tiny the Rabbit is NOT. Think of the Fit as an xA. Remember the Rabbit is bascially a Jetta without the trunk. SO, it is a bigger heavier car than ever, hence the Camry mpg instead of Scion mpg.
I saw a Rabbit the other day while I was out. It looks pretty good from the outside. I like the looks better than the Fit.
But for the size I would of thought it'd get better gas milage.. guess that weight adds up, along with the engine..

If anyone doesn't believe me, then they've never driven one with 30k miles on the odometer.
I used to valet before my knee went out, and I drove all sorts of cars, it really gave me a good idea on manufacturers who had their sh*t together.
2 worst brands I drove: Audi and VW. One was a brand new A4, and it rattled more than anything I've heard before, and I drove a new Jetta with about 15k on the clock, and the engine was making odd noises, and the person warned me that the parking break barely works--not to mention that the interior was falling apart as well.
The best build quality car? Tie Between Lexus ES class and the Hyundai Azera. The Hyundai had 50k miles, and it was dead quiet, and the interior still looked like new. I never liked Hyundai''s before that, now I'm seriously considering them as a trade in.
