2006 tC TRD Exhaust vs. 99 VW Beetle 1.8T
I have a guy here at work with a 99 Beetle Turbo that wants to race me. I wanted to ask if I should wait until I got my intake to race him or if you guys think I can beat him now. I would sure hate to get my butt handed to me by a Beetle. The only performance mod I have right now is the TRD Exhaust. I know I can out drive him but I don't much about the performance of his car compared to mine. Any feedback would be awesome.
whats mods does he have??? if he has a 99 1.8t its a 150hp...the 2002 til 2005 have 180hp motor but if he has mods on it like a Chip or exhaust, cai he'll romp you... 1.8t is one of the most tunable motors out...
even if he's stock he can still probualy beat ya..idk try

If the Beetle were stock, it'd likely be a close race. We've seen 0-60 times for the tC vary between 7.4 and 7.8 seconds. Motor Trend lists the '99 1.8T Beetle at 7.6, so if he's got a chip, you're toast!
I figured that but I think he is full of it because he said the dealer told him that. He doesn't know anything at all about cars so I am pretty sure the dealer was just blowing smoke up is ****. The story goes some race car driver I can't remember the name was supposed to buy it for his son and decided not to so they put it out on the lot and he bought it. I'm not a huge Nascar fun but I don't see on of the drivers buying his son a 99 Beetle. So I am pretty sure he was full of it so I guess I will go ahead and find a good spot and find out. There are a few back alley parking lots around here we can go where there are no pedestrians or traffic. I have another buddy that has a Tiburon GT 5speed with a Greddy Catback, Injen CAI and Aluminum Clutch and Flywheel setup I'll probably race him to just to see. I should be ordering my Injen CAI tomorrow so I will probably wait until that comes in before I attempt to race either one.

...whether I win or not, well that's a different story.

WC I never said I could put an intake on and beat anyone on the street
. I just said that it would give me a better chance. Yeah with the intake and the exhaust it only makes a little difference but I also know that when I had my Civic with just an exhaust and stock air box I got beat by a buddy of mine by at least a car length and a half or more with the same exact car with an exhaust and an intake and I made every shift perfect. So on that note every little bit helps. I'll go ahead and do it here in a couple of weeks with my "worthless" Exhaust and Intake and I will let you know how it goes.
I don't know about this garbage about the 1.8T being the most "tunable motor ever", but I will say if he's chipped or has a intake or downpipe or anything like that, you're pretty much toast.
Ditto on the Tibby GT. I understand the V-6 actually gets great gains from mods. I'm not a huge Tibby fan, but hey. If he's got catback and intake he'll more than likely smoke you.
Only way to find out is to race them though. The Bug I would guess has the best chance of beating you. A chip for that engine is probably around $500-600, and the gains can be pretty ridiculous.
EDIT:
Actually I looked at the APR chip for the 99 Bug just now and it looks like it gets pretty crappy gains after all. The chip requires a fuel pressure regulator (apparently the early turbo Beetles have tiny injectors), and only makes about 183hp. If you have decent mods, you should be pretty close.

The Beetle is bone dry stock. Like I said that is probably some bs the dealer told him to sell the car and no he has absolutely no mods on the Beetle whatsover. The Tibby on the other hand I know will probably smoke me but it will still be a fun race just to see what I can do. I am skeptical of the Header and down pipe due to the sound. I may just chip it and leave it at that. I'm not looking for outrageous crazy power I just want a little more power. Maybe the TRD supercharger a few years down the road I only say that because unless I win some money in the friggin lotto it will take me that long to save up for it.
I finally got my Injen CAI installed it sounds great. I can tell a little increase. I raced my buddy in his 2003 Tiburon with Injen CAI, Greddy Evo 2 Exhaust, and Upgraded Clutch and Flywheel on the interstate and some how I won. He said that his car was messed up though. Well I guess it is the Beetle next.
