AutoX People - Class Question

I've been scouring the 2008 rules to find out of adding a C Pillar bar would push me out of STS. I can't find any mention of it at all and don't really see anything that would say it's not allowed.

I'm looking to get some other opinions before I pull the trigger. The way I'm reading it, I'd be fine.

And yes, I'm well aware that the megan bar would make little to no effect. But every little bit will help. No matter how little.

to really get pushed out of STS, you would have to do something like LSD, flywheel, supercharger or turbo, bigger engine. or replace a large body panel with a light weight piece. like a cf hood or hatch or roof. to put it one way, does adding a full roll cage change what class your in? if not, why would a c-pillar brace?

Actually I don't know about the roll cage thing, never looked into it.

The main reason I'm curious is b/c there are restrictions on even the strut braces. You can only have two mounting points so the Ingalls 4-point rear strut brace is not allowed. So I wanted to be sure there wasn't any strange rules I'm not reading on other braces.

Re: AutoX People - Class Question

It's a rather old thread, but I don't think the rules for ST have changed much since then.

While that doesn't really give me a straight answer (I'm not sure anyone has one), it's a bit more input. :)

I just don't see anything that says it's not allowed, so I'll probably go for it. We have a small region anyway and I can't ever see anyone protesting or anything like that even if they did care.

I THINK it's not allowed.
A roll cage definitely would knock you into a different class.

to be sure, visit the scca website & look in the pdf rulebook. At one of the club autocrosses I do, I see lots of guys who decked out their cars & THEN went to autocross. They got booted into a serious class & got spanked.

you can also ask on sccaforums.com

the absolute biggest thing you can do is practice. being a better driver will make you faster than a strut bar will.
example: my autocross intructor WON my class in my XA. All it had were Hankooks, a rear antisway, an intake & exhaust. When I started, I finished dead last. Now, I'm middle of the pack & moving up.

have faith in yourself!

That's actually backwards from how people generally interpret the rule book in the SCCA. They go by "if it doesn't say it's allowed, it probably isn't." Or, the "better safe than sorry" approach, since it offers more in the way of "allowed"s than "strictly prohibited"s. Honestly, it's what I go with, too; I'd rather not have something on my car and then find out it's allowed... than have something on my car and then find out it's not allowed.

I've been scouring the rule book. There's no mention of it anywhere. That's the problem. Not even in the other classes... at least nothing specific about the c-pillar one.

G. Strut bars are permitted with all types of suspension. Strut bars
may be mounted only transversely across the car from upper
right to upper left suspension mounting point and from lower
right to lower left suspension mounting point. No other configuration
is permitted. Additional holes may be drilled for mounting
bolts. Only bolt-on attachment is permitted. Interior trim panels
may be modified to allow installation of strut bars. Holes or
slots may be no larger than necessary and may serve no other
purpose. This does not permit any modifications to the frame or
73
unibody beyond the allowed mounting holes.

looks like you're safe...

however, I suggest visiting sccaforums.com for your tech questions -those guys recite the rulebook in their sleep& good luck!

This isn't a strut tower brace though - which as you quoted, would be allowed. This isn't touching the strut towers. But I may try the scca forums anyway. Thanks!

don't forget to post pics!

No doubt. I have a list of stuff I have to get done at the moment anyway. Not to mention have to pick up the other two of NST's pulleys. So I have all new rotors, pads, ss lines, trans flush, pulleys, getting valve cover powder coated, scangauge ii ordered, and I'd like to be getting rear strut bar and if I can get by with it, perhaps the c pillar bar.

:)

CDogbert 07-18-2008 07:33 PM

Let me know how those pulleys do. I already have Agency's lightweight crank, but I was looking at getting the whole NST underdrive set for great justice.

ack154 07-18-2008 10:19 PM

Ya, I just got word from carcandymotorsports that they'll have the other ones next week (wednesday) so I'll probably at least be ordering soon.
