AutoX Season is Over
I don't know about other regions... but we just had our final event of the season yesterday for the Glen Region. It was a gorgeous day for racing... and we had the airstrip at the Seneca Army Depot again. We had 50 drivers registered and a crazy variety of cars (for our region anyways). Even though our computer showed up late and we started later than planned, we still got 8 runs in on another fast course.
I don't have any videos this time though. I didn't really plan on taking any when I left in the morning but turned out that I had forgotten one of my adapters to mount it anyways. But my friend's mom took just a couple pics of myself and her son with my camera, so I have a couple of pics on my pictures site from that. I'm hoping someone else got a few other pics too...
Overall for the season I did pretty well. Definitely improved as things went on. My tires are pretty much trash at this point and I need to get my all seasons mounted ASAP. I'm happiest with the last two events though... mostly because I had some real competition in both events. Three cars in my class at the previous event and then four cars yesterday - and I won both of them. I won my class for the year, of course.... but like I think I've mentioned before - there was no steady competition for the year so a lot of it was just me racing against myself.
Here's my plaque for the year though... hopefully I'll get an STS championship plaque later on to add to it. Not sure what they do for that though - if anything. Oh, and I finished 5th in PAX for the season.

I can't wait for next year! Will get some new tires. Possibly a set of coilovers if I can swing some H&Rs at some point.

Depends on what class you want to race in. You could do a stock class if you haven't done anything yet. I'd recommend that if you haven't done anything... run stock for a while to get used to it and learn a bit about your car.
One of the biggest things that will help though is new tires. A world of difference if you get some good summer tires compared to some all seasons.

I'm not sure how the xA compares to the tC for driving... but I think a rear sway might help quite a bit. Don't know though.
a rear sway will prolly help a bit. i know my xB could def use one. you can adjust ur tire pressures to help in handling big time. I have my rears very high and my fronts about 5-6 psi less than my rears. i like the way the car handles when the rear has a potential to slide and it does, nothing major, but it does. plus it preserves ur tires.
dont worry about a front unless its the hotchkis set, which i have read the front is still useless and incredibly hard to put on. do some research into what sway bars do, then start shoppin. i bet u'll just look into gettin just a rear. i have heard of plenty of ppl completely takin the front ones off for better handling. not on an xA/xB cause racing doesnt seem to be what we are supposed to do, but i may try it for next season.
btw, my suspension is stock, my tires are prolly the most all season u can get and have treadwear of 660. i have a SRI and 4-2-1 header. i also use a G-Force Racing torso strap and lock my seatbelt. get to a proper racing position. get ur seatbelt as tight as possible, then pull it to lock it, hold it to keep it locked, unbuckle while still holdin it locked, twist the buckle part a few times, then plug it back it. u will not move if u have done this right.
go, have fun, ask all the questions u can think of, ppl are always willin to help. hell, even talk to the organizers and see if u can get a ride someone and/or a veteran auto-x'r to ride w/ u. and turn traction control off.

yes, and i have a Fujita SRI and Monster Motorworks/Weapon*R 4-2-1 header, so my car is pretty much stock. i have looked at buyin coilovers, a rear sway bar, front strut bar, and wheels/tires, but i am a college kids' budget. my tires suck, but they have lasted a long time. it sounds so gnarly on my in-car vids which are on my myspace.

oh that's right. I printed out the breakdown from your local SCCA site.
If only I went back to nosebleed height on my XA, life would be easier...
aah...it'll be fun - other than getting up at 6am on a Saturday...

well, no pics yet, but here's the story...
I got up around 6 to leave about 6:30. Followed a vette with SCCA stickers from about halfway. Saw an Imprezza RS who ended up being a super nice guy & a competitor.
Got there about 7:30am & went to registration. The course was bening RT66 dragstrip. The lot was the length of the strip, so 1/4 mile. I'm guessing the course was a bit longer than 1/2 mile.
Evidentally, there has never been a Scion at an SCCA Solo event. They weren't sure of the classing. Until I told them it was lowered. I was put in STS.
Stock allows changes of air filter (not intake), muffler, & they can run slicks.
STS can do just about anything except turbo/blower, have to run street tires with 225 max width on max 7.5" wheel
Back to the story...
The registrar introduced me to a very nice older guy whose name I forgot. He helped me put my numbers on the doors with minimal impact, walked me around the course, telling me where to be & what to do.
It was still very confusing. The course is marked only by cones.
As an example, if there is a single standing cone with a cone laying down next to it, you go the direction the cone is pointing. While going as fast as you can, IN CONTROL. That was the trick.
Back to the story...
The first guy intruduced me to an English gentleman with an S2000. I was to ride along on a couple of his runs, snice we were in different heats.
He was in stock class. he had an upgraded exhaust & slicks.
The first run, all I could say was "Holy crap! This is REALLY fast!!!"
The second run as a passenger, I decided "I'm not driving. Pay attention to your surroundings. Learn the course. Pay attention to what he does."
My first run was fair. Like I was told most first-timers get too excited. I braked too late. I was unweighted in the corners, trying to accelerate while the tires were slipping. I also had a bit of a difficulty looking far enough ahead & finding the next cones quickly enough. I had to let up a couple times for this & even had one DNF because I missed a turn...
Over five runs, I shed about 5 seconds off my run time. I was happy with any improvement. My fastest time was around 59 seconds. I needed to be at around 52. I shifted into 3rd ONCE. This was normal.
This was amazing. NO attitude, no booming. EVERYBODY I talked with was friendly.
Hell - people I never met came up to me giving me first-timer tips, including competitors in my class.
The guy in the Imprezza that I saw on the road was talking with me all day. Can't wait for next year.
