NEW DRIVERS FOR SEVERAL CHAMP CAR TEAMS AND OTHER RACING NEWS

OPEN WHEEEL

RIDE SWAPPING: A.J. Allmendinger was fired from his Champ Car World Series drive with RuSPORT Racing and replaced with former series champion Cristiano da Matta. In addition, Mario Dominguez was let go from Forsythe Racing and is expected to be replaced by Allmendinger. Finally, Ryan Hunter-Reay is among the candidates to fill da Matta’s seat with Dale Coyne Racing.

KING COONS: Jerry Coons, Jr. swept USAC midget and sprint car events at Lake Ozark Speedway in Missouri, then continued his winning ways with a triumph in Badger Midget Series action at Angell Park Speedway in Wisconsin.

NASCAR

MOVING ON: Casey Mears will be leaving Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of the season and is currently seeking a new job. Meanwhile, Brian Vickers has begged out of his long-term contract with Hendrick Motorsports and is testing the waters as well. Vickers may be on the short list to drive for the new Red Bull Toyota team and Mears could replace Vickers at Hendrick.

THIS AND THAT

BIG MONEY: Scott Bloomquist picked up $100,000 for winning The Dream dirt-late-model race for the fourth time in his career Saturday at Eldora Speedway in Ohio.

DATE CHANGE: After years of racing at Texas Motor Speedway the week following the Indianapolis 500, the Indy Racing League went to Watkins Glen that week and to Texas two weeks later. TMS President Eddie Gossage says the move hurt the crowd at TMS and would like a better date for next season. However, the IRL is hoping to move its July date at The Milwaukee Mile to the week following Indianapolis.

RETIRED: Longtime public-address announcer Tom Carnegie retired from his duties at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after 61 years. In that time, Carnegie called 61 Indianapolis 500s, 12 Brickyard 400 and six US Grand Prix.

STILL NO. 1: Sebastien Bourdais remained atop the NSSN Power Rankings. The series heads to Portland Int’l Raceway this weekend and Bourdais will attempt to go five-for-five on the season.

THE TUBE: Speed Channel’s “Wind Tunnel” with Dave Despain on Sunday, June 18, will feature longtime NSSN Editor Chris Economaki. The show airs at 9 p.m. (Eastern Time).
