What exactly does it mean when you say "Riding the clutch?"

not keeping it fully dis-engaged I believe. A good way to wear it out

Correct. Keeping partial-pressure on the clutch lets the plates slip, which causes heat and wear.
Not good to do - a bad habit that will cost you $$$.

That is why you always want to get in the habit of using the dead pedal when cruising or not needing to change gears.... keep that foot away from the clutch when you don't need to use it.

Traffic is a killer for clutch-riding as well...

when stuck in traffic neutral is your best friend, dont keep ridding the clutch to just move a few more feet. Also u guys might not know this but i found out a lil trick that helps somestimes, like if all u have to move is a few inches at a time just press the stick agaisnt the first or second gear slots without using your clutch and the car will begin to inch along. Just press it with sum pressure and i think what happns its the lil synchro things inside the gearbox start catchin partial gear. Just try it and u'll see what im talkin about.

Go to another mechanic and get a second (ok, 3rd) opinion.
Then, call Toyota and say you need to start mediation on this problem.

First gear doesn't have synchros, so make sure that if you do this you're not grinding at all.

hmmm then im not really sure what it is. Its not grinding, that would be obvious. I think it does it on the nsx too dont remember.

as you do it, you can watch the rpms slightly dip as the car begins to slowly roll.

i'm kinda scared to try that.
i've heard of people starting off in second gear when in traffic, i'm not sure how that works though

Stupid question but what is rubbing on what? My exhaust is lose and hitting the bottom of the car and I went to the dealer and they said its normal. It moves all over way more than normal because I compared while I was at the dealer. But everything looks right and thats probably all they did. Time to try another dealer I guess.

i tried to lurch the car forward by pushing it in 1st gear with the clutch all the way out. it moved forward slowly. i didn't want to push it any harder because i thought it would grind. it would work ok in traffic if it moved forward a little faster. i'll try again tomorrow
